Formula one Montreal - K-1 vs K-3

So I took both cameras (and my wife) and wanted to see how much better the K-1 was at high speed focusing. I also spotted someone there with a K-50 with a 50-200. There was not a lot of difference between the cameras, except that the K-1 was able to focus faster while panning while the K-3 just seemed to give up. I was using a Tamron 70-300 on the K-1 and the kit lens (18-135) on the K-3. Here are two photos a few laps (and a pit stop) apart, in the photo with the K-1 the car is going much faster. Personally i like the one from the K-3 better, but from the 1700 or so images this is the exception, not the rule. Neither image has been edited in any way - these are in camera jpgs.

Not surprising , the K1 AF seems to be a modified version of the K3's AF , plus some cosmetics such as red frame blinking when in focus similar to what's implemented in the D750 or Canon 7DII. Red frame flash in the viewfinder is pure cosmetic because it does not improves AF performance in any way, although it gives the users (and the reviewers) the impression the K1 AF has improved. Too me, the K3 AF is still more responsive compared to the K1 which seems to have a bit of added lag to lock AF.

However, you used lenses (Tamron 70-300 and 18-135) with which both K3 and K1 AF are slower than with new DFA lenses which seems to have motorization to take the camera AF to another level of AF performance effective with both K3 and K1.

Nice shots! I love Formula 1 . And you photographed the driver I like better from the Mercedes duo .

Were you using a tripod or are these handheld? Definitely the first pic from the K-3 looks better. But the car wasn't going the same speed so not the most fair evaluation. But it's nice to see the K-3 isn't too far behind the K-1. I just picked up a used K-3 so I'm looking forward to see how it compares to the K-S2.

All the shots are handheld, unless you have a media pass the rules say no entry with tripods or mono-pods - so I left mine 600km away only to see dozens of tripods. The k-3 performs well, the K-1 just outperforms it in every way. It was fun watching all the Nikon and Canon users panic when the rain started, although today's showers were enough for me. the K-50 I saw was actually a K-30, he ended up sitting near us in qualifying. I know I have one good shot from this afternoons qualifying session - at the end so I thought I would share it. This is directly from the camera.
