autofocus in LV

I bought the K1 body only; so I tried it with some of my AF analog lenses. When it focusses in Live view, it turns the lens to its minimal distance and then to the correct setting.
When not in LV it focusses to the correct distance immediatly.

That is the difference between the two modes, phase detection, where the direction to the correct distance is known. contrast autofocus where the direction is not knowable

Yup, this is the normal behavior. However, a positive side-effect of this is that live view focusing is not subject to front focus or back focus.

At least yours finds focus eventually. Live view af on my K1 makes a lot of noise but rarely locks onto anything.

My oldest 28-80, the heavy black one, sure makes a racket, to the point that a was afraid it was going to fly off, But it focusses OK.

Don't point it at a uniform surface, Wheatfield, or something in shadow.

'Contrast Detection' needs something both light and dark under the focus point at the same time.

Then why does our Live View work, and yours not?

I even use the phone app to take portraits, and that relies entirely on Live View.

It could be. I don't have a lot of AF lenses. The 3 FA Limiteds, an FA 24/f/2 and the DFA 100 macro. The all just rack back and forth from lock to lock. It's not a biggie, I use the viewfinder most of the time, and if I'm in live view I'm probably manual focusing anyway.

It works in every other respect. I've gotten used to Pentaxes having some quirks.

Your case is really odd. For a DSLR, it's the CDAF system that has copy-to-copy variation.
