Originally posted by WPRESTO When I tested my Metz 52 on a K1 in FF mode, it would not discharge (=the camera would not trigger the flash). However, if the menu option "extended flash" is selected on the Metz, the 52 worked correctly, perfectly. This was the clue that the problem with older pTTL strobes involved communicating the correct focal length or flash width to the camera. Older after-market pTTL strobes communicate an APS-C appropriate flash width for the FL on a K1 in FF mode, which would be too narrow, so the camera refuses to trigger the flash. The "extended flash" option on high-end Metz units puts out a one-unit FL wider beam, which the K1 interprets as correct for the FL of lens or zoom position in use when in FF mode. Predictably, IF "extended flash" is NOT selected, AND IF the K1 is in crop mode, the flash works perfectly*. The firmware updates for those Metz units that have a USB port corrects this focal-length problem.
*50mm lens on K1 in FF mode, Metz attached in pTTL with no options selected, flash will not discharge; switch K1 to crop mode, flash discharges with correct pTTL exposure and coverage; switch camera back to FF mode AND select "extended flash" on the Metz, flash discharges with correct pTTL exposure and coverage.
I believe this is incorrect. The Metz 52 AF-1, with V1.3 firmware, works perfectly with my K1, and it's in "standard" zoom mode, not "extended". And "extended mode" is NOT the appropriate way to account for sensor size. It seems you should instead set "zoom-size" to "on" in the options menu.
From the manual: "Certain types of digital cameras allow the display for the position of the reflector to be adjusted to chip-format (dimensions of the recording module) using the Zoom Size function".
Although it sounds like this may only change the focal length displayed on the Metz screen, that is not the case. I tried shooting a blank wall with "Zoom Size" turned off and on, and both reported the correct FL (as set on my DFA 28-105). However, the flash coverage with Zoom Size turned Off was significantly reduced.
As far as I can see, the Metz 52 AF-1 works perfectly on the K1 when the "Zoom Size" option is set to "On". Irrespective, in no case did my Metz refuse to fire.
