The K-1 and Metz flashes. Good news!

If you have a Metz 44 AF-1 / 48 AF-1 / 50 AF-1 / 58 AF-1 / 58 AF-2 you will need a firmware update to make it work in FF mode.

I have been sent the new firmware from Metz and the reason for it not to be released on their homepage yet is that the MAC version is not finished yet.

I don't seem to be able to attach the file...

EDIT1: You now can find a download link to the file in post #11

EDIT2: Here is the link... https://www.dropbox.com/s/e9gi7pn9l3tuzt1/MB58%20MB50%20MB48%20MB44%20Pentax%20GB.zip?dl=0

EDIT3: I have updated my 50 and it now works perfectly in FF mode

EDIT4: The update can now be found on Metz homepage.

That's great to hear! I'm sure many have been waiting for this fix.

Great news for Metzers.
Very responsive of Metz too. Some camera gear brands make you wait years for firmware updates.

So long as Metz posts the fix eventually, I can use my 360 II while waiting. Too bad it's not possible to upgrade the itsy-bitsy Metz 24. It would be handy to carry as a substitute (or fix) for a pop-up flash on the K1. Wonder if they'll put out a revised K1-compatible version of the extremely popular Metz 26. That would be another trivial-extra-weight flash to carry along when using the K1.

The 52 is still a major flash in the Metz lineup, so it's probably only a matter of time before a firmware upgrade is available.

In what way doesn't the 52 AF-1 work in FF?

When I tested my Metz 52 on a K1 in FF mode, it would not discharge (=the camera would not trigger the flash). However, if the menu option "extended flash" is selected on the Metz, the 52 worked correctly, perfectly. This was the clue that the problem with older pTTL strobes involved communicating the correct focal length or flash width to the camera. Older after-market pTTL strobes communicate an APS-C appropriate flash width for the FL on a K1 in FF mode, which would be too narrow, so the camera refuses to trigger the flash. The "extended flash" option on high-end Metz units puts out a one-unit FL wider beam, which the K1 interprets as correct for the FL of lens or zoom position in use when in FF mode. Predictably, IF "extended flash" is NOT selected, AND IF the K1 is in crop mode, the flash works perfectly*. The firmware updates for those Metz units that have a USB port corrects this focal-length problem.

*50mm lens on K1 in FF mode, Metz attached in pTTL with no options selected, flash will not discharge; switch K1 to crop mode, flash discharges with correct pTTL exposure and coverage; switch camera back to FF mode AND select "extended flash" on the Metz, flash discharges with correct pTTL exposure and coverage.
