I've always done the pre-focus technique for shooting HiF, but that's because until K-1, AF was just not up to the task. I have experimented with it and it seems pretty usable now (in good light). Might give it a go again at another show this weekend.

Do you mean AF.C hold-high? I've not used that setting at all keeping it off.

Yes. The setting protects you from a situation where the AF refocuses quickly on an obstacle when the horse briefly is behind it. The "hold" ignores obstacles for a brief time. And that is required here.

The same problem on rodeo. Busy, moving, fast action, close to the subject back and foreground, AF goes everywhere, it's hard to control.

SRS in the UK offered these major discounts end of August, similar to what they did with the DFA 150-450 some weeks before (which also ended up at around 1600 EUR).

Yes, that is why I shot all images wide open. The background in many images is rather distracting, so a lot of blur helps.

It's a very valid approach, but would need a lot of training and exercise as well. The moment when everything is right doesnt last so long...
The two extra challenges here in favour of me going with AF were:
a) I wanted to take multiple shots of the same rider at different obstacles. If I were going to use prefocussing I'd have had to finetune that via focus peaking and LV and that takes too long to change around all the time.
b) in full res 36 MPx it does make a difference where exactly the horse jumps in relation to the obstacle width and that is not predictable. So you'd loose sharpness in some images.
