Annoying noise on K-1

When I depress/half push the shutter button, there is a noise as the camera activates itself. It lasts for about 1.5-2 seconds, before abruptly stopping. Does anyone know what this noise is? For example, whether the focus mode is manual or not makes no difference.

It may be the Shake Reduction function starting.

Yea the SR mechanism activates even when not in use to get sensor locked to correct position. Sony A7x with IBIS does the same thing though it is somewhat more silent.

It’s not only an annoying sound, it also drains power from the battery.
The K5 and earlier did not do this. At first I thought it was a new masterplan to shorten the delay between depressing the shutter button until the picture is taken. But as far as I know the delay is still about the same as for the K5 and earlier models. The only reason I can come up with now is to lessen the “kick” in the body by lifting the sensor earlier.

I don't get that noise - certainly not for such a long time - but could it be related to the settings or mode? There are so many options that it's not possible to compare without details - but does it happen on the most basic settings? I also use back-button AF, which might mean something less has to be activated.

I've done some basic tests and it's makes the noise regardless of whether shake reduction is on or off. It makes the same noise when I press the AF button. This is in full manual mode so I don't think it's related to focus.

Basically this noise is not noticeable when shooting with normal ambient noise, but is really noticeable in quiet conditions. It has a kind of mechanical sound, and ends with a small clunk that feels if something is moving back into place.

Isn't it also a larger sensor, and supposedly more stops than the k-5 and k-5ii? Something has to give to get those benefits.

I think you just have to listen more carefully. It isn't loud, but it's not hard to hear either with your face close to the camera.

OK - if I put my ear right to the camera I can hear it - but it's not what I'd call a noise, just a sound

Even with the camera powered off, you can still at times feel the mechanism moving around a bit, when you pick up the camera, at least on the K1's have used. No problems with images, just took a bit of getting used to for me.

I can hear a sound like something is spinning inside as soon as i press/half press the shutter and it goes away shortly after I remove my finger from the button. The same sound is always present during LV regardless of the button being pressed or SR on/off. My guess is it is made by the SR mechanism itself as it problably still needs to hold the sensor "in place" even with SR off

But I can really only hear it I put my ear to the camera so I will just forget the whole matter the moment I finish this post....

Both K-1 and Sony A7x IBIS bodies rattle like toy when shaken. I hope it does not become stirred :/

I just thought I'd report that just today (after a couple of months owning a K-1) did I hear this same noise. I had never noticed it before, but it's very possible it was making the noise before, as today when I heard it I was alone in a small bedroom and it was extremely quiet (usually I have kids and/or wildlife contributing to a lot of background noise)...

The first thing I did was google 'K-1 shutter noise' and here I am, so it's nice to know I am not alone, I was worried something was amiss.

It's a trend now. So may cameras (and lenses) rely on electomagnetic fields to hold things in place (eg sensors). The most disturbing 'rattle' I've come across is that of the Sigma E-mount 19/30/60mm f2.8 lens trio. When any of those lenses don’t have power, the focus group flops around inside the lens. Lens sounds like a maraca.

Really? in years past focusing groups flopping around inside lenses would cause outrage.
