First frame after installing the firmware upgrade in my Pentax K-1 that adds the option of a 1:1 crop.

According to Adobe Camera Raw file properties, file size is 42.83 MB, dimensions 4912x4912, bit depth 16.
Handheld 1/15 sec. at f/8 with 15mm lens (which was designed for the APS-C format).

I expect that this is about close as I am going to get to a 'full-frame' digital Hasselblad. The sensor area is 24x24mm
on the Pentax in the 1:1 crop, as compared to 56x56 on the film version of the Hasselblad. Smaller, but larger than the 13x13mm
of the micro four-thirds cameras.

The 15mm lens yields a diagonal angle of view almost five degrees wider than the Biogon on the Super Wide C. The Pentax DA 21mm
is one degree wider than the 50mm Distagon, and the Pentax 35mm Macro is one degree narrower than the 80mm Planar.

Bestest of all: Ricoh/Pentax just gave this update to us without charge or fanfare.

That is fantastic! I've always lobbied for a square sensor of about 30x30mm, but having this option is equally good, better with 24x36 available too.
Nice to see the 15mm Limited reach its 'fullest' potential

I can still see a bit of obvious vignetting in the corners - the very light-coloured walls and ceiling of the bathroom show it up too well. Against a blue sky, it would also show; against a darker background (e.g. heavily wooded forest; jungle canopy above) you might fail to perceive it (as is the case in the lower corners here).

If the 15 is this close, the 21 and 35 will probably have no issues at 1:1 - any way you slice it, this is a nice little string to the K-1's bow. Do you get any sort of framing cues in the viewfinder, or do you have to guess and hope?

It is compositional aid. Very different thing to compose with 1:1 ratio compared to cropping in post.

And 25mp's in the square is nothing to sneeze at either. I spent MANY hours in the darkroom printing Hasselblad negatives to 24x24 inches and it was hard work to get a decent fine art print. With 25mp's 24x24 inch prints are standard fare, I would think 40x40 inches would be easy as well.

Shoot a Pentax 645Z or 645D and then crop to square. Get an even bigger file.

Or better yet, shoot at the native frame size and get the adantage of even more muffin pans and then crop exactly the way you want it in PP.

If you have trouble composing square, have someone build you a focus screen with the square engraved on it.

Ah well, it is nice that Ricoh considered this important enough to include in their firmware upgrade. I do hope though that they also spent a little time fixing known bugs that actually have an effect on camera useage.

There are 2 big black bars on either side of the viewfinder showing you the boundary of the square. It is very nice and makes composing in the square very easy.


(Just fyi, the APS-c crop mode shows the same thickness black rectangle for the crop mode. It is a very nice implementation and makes crop composing just as easy.)


Both with the grid overlay and the instant crop choices by that 3rd wheel makes this one of the nicest and easiest FF viewfinders out there to work with. (I've shot D810, D750, 5DII/III, 6D etc. )

To "pathdoc": On of my attractions to the K-1's full-frame is the ability to maximize the APS-C limited lenses I have (15m 21m, 35m, 70m); to take them to the limits of coverage. The 1:1 crop then extends these limits. Wow!
Think about all the Eugene Atget photographs that would be lost if you drew the line of acceptability at vignette!

I am reminded of the Bill Brandt quotation: "I am not interested in rules or conventions. Photography is not a sport."

And to "Pioneer": Well, having lived with everything from 8x10 on down, and avoided both muffins and progeny, I can say that I am very happy with what is. Your life is what is yours, and not mine.

I do have a few thoughts on the matter and have been thinking about what I want to present. I'm wanting to do some location videos and figuring that out has been causing me to take my time.
