K-1 and DFA*70-200 AF

So I got myself the DFA*70-200 for the K-1 and yesterday when it arrived I did some quick test shots and was happy with the IQ.

Today I did some real world shooting and I found that the focusing was not hitting the target. Adjusting only moved the problem. When ok @200 short distance it is not ok @ long distance. Using Live view focus and it is spot on.

Any thoughts?

EDITED: Removed statement about sluggish focus...

Send both in to your local authorised Pentax repair centre and have them adjusted. Or alternatively send the lens back and get another copy.

Your camera batteries need to be topped up to get max focus performance.

I just compared the 70-200 with the 150-450 so I retract the sluggish part of the problem. It was missing the target and I thought it may have been due to sluggish focusing, I do no longer think so.

I have the same camera/lens combination, and it is frighteningly sharp and accurate at all focal lengths. Simply astounding.

Send it back for a replacement or send it for service. Mine is very sharp and accurate across the entire range. I would double check AF micro adjust at 200mm and min. focal distance.

I would either exchange it or send it for service. The only time I ever had trouble was one time when I flipped the focus limiter by accident and couldn't focus on anything far away. It was super-frustrating for about five minutes till I realized that the switch was set for 1.2 -4 m. But I assume you've already looked at that...

Yup... Checked all those things. 70-135 the focus is perfect. @200 it is no longer perfect.
Also used the 150-450 on the same targets to ensure no environmental problems.

The lens is obviously a dud...

How much OOF are we talking, with many of the zooms out there you can have some degree of focus shift at different distances and or stopping down and a lot of the lenses designed for nice OOF renderings will show focus shift.

My copy of the 70-200 F/2.8 requires the same adjustement for all focal lengths
For the 24-70 perfect adjustment for all focal lengths is not possible.

Canon allows for two adjustment settings for zooms. Pentax could do the same to help for difficult lens designs - that said, the 70-200 should be fine without double adjustment.

Send the DFA24-70 in for adjustment. I did and now it is good on all FL's.

In this case the best could be to check the lens focus with another K-1,because the AF adjustment of the camera could be the problem with different focus quality in a zoom.
I will hope that your next zoom is perfect, like all the 8 *70-200 lenses of my test tour.
Best regards
