Ricoh Response to 1.4 upgrade, white dot problem, etc.

This is the Ricoh response to my concerns about overly aggressive noise reduction. I find the response quite satisfactory, and am also quite relieved that they are keeping their hands off of the raw image. RAW is RAW, folks ... and I don't want any non-selectable processing of a raw image before it gets to storage.

Ricoh Imaging

Regarding the latest FW1.4 of K-1, it is enhance the performance of white dot noise reduction processing for JPEG image. This will not remove faint stars, basically it is improved the default original setting (but not applied for the noise reduction setting), customer worry about the stars will have been eaten that is related when turn ON the noise reduction mode. So, this latest FW will help customer who doesn't wants to use noise reduction setting and also get the expected image. (This improvement is applied for JPEG only but not for RAW)

Original setting (When Slow Shutter Speed NR is OFF and JPEG image) ---> Improved by FW1.4
Noise reduction setting ---> Remain no change

Star eater is just fine for non-astro long exposure work. I would like one as an option for RAW processing as well.

Star Eaters are what I call those annoying driveway and porch lights that neighbors leave on all night. They DESTROY faint stars and nebula.

Ricoh did it right for the k1 mark 1, but screwed it up for mark 2.

You were happy at beginning of thread .... why re-awaken this thread now when we have actual evidence????

Lonely speck review of the K-1II for astrophotography - PentaxForums.com

Lonely Speck's Astrophotography tests showed no evidence of "star eating" with the K-1II. As of the time of this posting no one else has shown any evidence either.

Most importantly, the problem is not detrimental to star details and does not present the same problem as the Sony star-eater issue.
If you have images that show this phenomenon then share them.

Yes, he personally endorsed that article as telling unpleasant truth
