Tony Northrup picks K-1 and love from The Camera Store

I was surprised to see Tony give the K-1 something much higher than an 'honourable mention' or the like:

Chris and Jordan from TCSTV got drunk and excited about cameras (including the K-1). A great watch, if you haven't seen that yet:

Why the surprise? He rated the K-S2 as the best in it's class and considered the K-1 as possibly the best landscape camera in his earlier review.

Just wondering if she is his sister or if she is his wife. Amazing how those two seem to work well together.
Comment about the gear. There aren't many cameras that provide a range of lenses that cover all needs. But the new camera are more specialized: D500 for action shots, GFx for landscape and fashion, K1 for landscape and fashion on a budget, XT2 for the traveler. I guess the D810, and 5DIV are becoming kind of end of the era of general purpose cameras, neither the best for sports, nor the best for landscapes. The 5DIV is seating in the middle, it's not fast enough for sports, it's got less resolution than K1/D810/A7rII to the point that 1.5 crop isn't yield much resolution, and it is one of the most expensive model in its class.

I suppose. I feel like it's held back on AF and Video to be a superior 'all-around' camera, but I think he made the right choice. I feel like Pentax has done a better job innovating this year that the other manufacturers.

Definitely wife.

I think you have a really good point about the 5DIV. That helps me understand why people were so disappointed by it, and why I've been so happy with my new gear.

Those videos mentioning the Pentax K1 are really good to get this camera known outside of Pentax land as an attempt to generate sales from outside of the Pentax user base.

That is definitely true. Those are two of the most popular photography related youtube channels. It will really help Pentax to become more popular. But I'm also very exited how many new users have already been attracted to Pentax. I have seen so many new forum members that said they signed up here because they just bought their first Pentax (mostly K-1 and K-70). Well done Ricoh/Pentax!

Yup - people tend to say it's OK that the D500 is a specialist camera for sports/wildlife, but not that it's Ok to be a specialist 'field' camera - probably because the Pentax range of bodies is more limited, but not entirely logical either - still, good to see.

D810 is still king of the hill for landscape purposes. You can use 19mm pc-e for all daylight wide angle needs and 45mm + 85mm pc-e for longer focal lengths. Or Otus lenses.

Same can be said for 5D4 - superb 17mm & 24mm T/S lenses and excellent 90mm option.

I am happy that Tony showed some love for Pentax. It definitely will get Pentax's name out there.

Tony picked the K1 as camera of the year. His wife picked a Nikon camera. His wife said she liked the K1 and would have given it the camera of the year, but didn't because it would cause her to get a new set of lenses.

Well, that's a poor criteria to use. In other words, Tony's wife will only ever pick a Nikon, Canon, or Fuji camera as the camera of the year because no matter how amazing a new Sigma, Pentax, Olympus, Samsung, or Sony camera is, she will never vote it the camera of the year because she does not currently have the lenses for it.

For a person like you or me it might be rational but I agree that a reviewer needs to think as if they had no current investment when naming the best camera of the year.

I think it's just a way of getting two items on the list - many other categories got a his/her pick as well. Let's face it, the D500 and K-1 are aimed at completely different photographers.

Maybe if he hadn't said the iPhone 7 was good for portraiture I would have taken him seriously.

For many people it will be an excellent portraiture option as at the end of the day not many people have a dedicated camera.

Great to see the positive mentions the K-1 gets. Though I can't really stand Tony well and his wife is even less likeable. But that's just me I guess.
