How Many Of You...

are planning on giving up your premium legacy glass for new versions? I think the good stuff should be assembled in Japan.

Can't wait to see top-flight resolution with the K-1.

Not at any fast rate, the new lenses are expensive!

I'm planning on getting the 77 or 85 at some point, and would love the new 70-200 zoom, but that's real money.

I'm sticking with the 3 Amigos, DFA 100 WR and 15-30, DFA* 70-200 and Zeiss ZK 2/35 and 1.4/85, K-1.2/50. Others too, but they've been boxed up and stored.

Way enough gear and too much to haul long distance already along with all the other gubbins' like multiple speedlights, two bodies with grips and wotnot.

Spent waaaay too much on gear these past couple of years and the future looks well, a bit bleak right now to be honest.

These new fast primes look huge. I have the Sony Zeiss FE 1.4/35 (for sale) and it's a beast. Just don't know how I'd pack a bunch of these type of lenses.

I'm not giving up my 3 amigos.

If anything once stuff settles for my life a bit I will leap into the K1 with a 24-70.

Eventually I might grab that new 50. And if they do any wide primes for sure. The 85 would be a possibility eventually.

Probably in that order.

I'm going to offload most of my FA*'s. Might keep one 85mm and the 200mm macro just for the sake of the collection, though.

Not me. I mostly use primes, and all recent Pentax lenses are zooms.
Slowly the situation will change, but I don't think the new fast primes would come cheap.
I hope to be wrong, though the cost of Pentax/Tamron zooms doesn't make me very optimistic.
Fortunately I often use manual focus, so I have a good number of options. I don't mind if it's made in Korea, or in China. I care about price performance ratio.
I used to avoid lenses made in Korea. Nowadays it doesn't make much sense anymore.
Know how, technology, machines can be transferred from one place to another place faster than ever before.
Even very complex cameras can be made in countries like Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia etc etc, with Japanese technology, with no effect on reliability and quality control.
Lens making/assembly is way simpler.
Let's not forget that there was a time, not so long ago, when quality motorcycles, and also lenses, were made in Europe. Japanese ones were "Far East copies of the real ones"!
The world has changed a lot from those days, and now is changing even faster.

I guess I'll buy one of the new FF zooms sooner or later, but the lens I crave for is, guess what... Chinese!
It's the Laowa 105mm Smooth Trans Focus
I think we will see a rapid growth of Chinese optical industry in the next few years

Cheers

Me too
The FA ltds are "good enough" for me. Heck, the Takumars are good enough for me. I dunno if the nature of light has changed much since 1960. Trends and tastes for some have, for sure.

You'd have to pry my FA 24mm, 31mm, 77mm and FA 20-35mm out of my dead hands before i would give those up.
I can see myself going for the Pentax 15-30mm as I want that extra bit of UW and keep using my Pentax F and FA lenses
as long as possible (also can't wait to try out the Tamron 24-135mm I'm using iwth my K-5iis).
Too much $$$ invested in classic Pentax Glass to walk away.

Before you spend the budget on the 15-30 take a look at the DFA* 70-200.

I got both at the same time and although the 15-30 is useful it doesn't have the WOW factor of the 70-200. I actually prefer my Samyang 2.8/14.

Not likely that I will unload my 28-70 FA* 2.8 or 80-200 FA* 2.8. These render beautifully on the K-1 and stand up to the new glass in terms of contrast and (in the case of the 28-70 at least) sharpness. I did buy the Pentax 15-30 2.8 and it is a great addition to the stable. The sunbursts from the 15-30 are really something to behold. I still use the following on the K-1: 24-90 FA, 80-320 FA, 17-28 F fisheye zoom (can't believe how well this works), 50 FA 1.4, 35 FA 2.0.. Pheonix 19-35 and Tamron 28-300....not so much :-).

The new DFA* 70-200 is assembled in Vietnam, as I expect all the new DFA* primes will be. Pentax doesn't have a lens assembly plant in Japan anymore, AFAIK, thanks to Hoya.

Initially, when the K1 came out with the DFA lenses, I wanted to get the DFA24-70/2.8 but the price in Singapore was
very high at SGD$2,300 (USD$1,640).

So I decided against it and got the FA*28-70/2..8 instead.

My current gears for the K1
FA31/1.8
FA43/1.9
FA77/1.8
FA*28-78/2.8
FA*200/2.8
K85/1.8
K50/1.4
A50/1.2
Sears 135/2.8 Macro
Rokinon 14/2.8

If not being used and not on display, what's the point?

Define "legacy". I'm using exclusively AF, and I do see myself thinning my current herd of normal primes (DA40, F50 F1.7, FA50 F1.4, K50 F1.2), but I want to see if Pentax does the "HD upgrade" trick with the FA Limiteds it did with the DA Limiteds. I'd pay good money for a FA43 with DC and WR.

As long as no one comes out with a FF equivalent for the DA21 (regarding starbursts, mainly) I'll hold on to it.

I'll probably modify my 60-250 soon to make it full frame compatible, but if Pentax released an upgrade (with DC or PLM?) I'd buy it.

None of this is particularly "legacy".

The good stuff should be assembled wherever there can be good quality control and Lean manufacturing. Be it Japan, Canada, the US, China, Korea, Viet Nam, or anywhere else.

I will probably by the D-FA* 24mm, 35mm, & 50mm. I have a Sigma 85mm that is very good and the D-FA* 70-200mm. My Sigma 50mm is pretty good on the K-1, but AF is not as consistent as I would like. I like my 31mm LTD, but using it for interior photography I have noticed some ghosting when stacking images. I need a good wide to ultra wide with better coatings. I have been holding off on the D-FA 15-30mm , but it looks like it will be the end of the year before we even see the D-FA* 50mm.
