Have you tried taking a few shots against a light colored blank wall/ceiling to see if it consistently shows up in the same place, doesn't move etc. or is even still there? Eliminates bugs, might show hair moving slightly, quick easy way to verify it's persistent.
I mentioned in my OP I took such a shot. I also mentioned I took another such at the same time of the same scene outdoors and didn't have the effect.

More or less trying to ensure it isn't a sensor defect.

It's birds.

I ran the images through a high-pass filter and spread out the levels to get the attached. You can see the wings flapping - the pattern is very regular. The more-curved path shows almost the same thing, although it's harder to see.

Sensor dust, hairs, etc. would not make such nice patterns. And, the 1-second exposure is just right, too - a modest-sized bird (crow?) flaps its wings a few times per second.

I'd go for bats, too - based on Pete_XL's pictures below. Those are neat!

A bird? That's an interesting suggestion. I did not think of that!

Somebody call Sheldon Cooper, photographic evidence to support string theory.

I bet it's a bat or a bird. These are little bats chasing moths under a floodlight:

i first thought its a hair, maybe even a free-floating (possibly synthetic) fiber, on the back element, inside the lens, in the mirror box, or on the sensor itself. But the explanation of it being a long exposure and something like a bat flying across the frame is good, too!

I'm somewhat leaning towards bug. I found this site while googling for '1 second exposure with bug flying' Flying rods phenomenon skyfish rod paranormal ASSAP if you go down to the 'different rod types' it shows a couple images that look similar to me. Not exact, but somewhat similar.
I saw a video on this and it does look like some of the flight path paths of bugs caught with digital sensors, with the "barbs" here being the wing beats

at 1/25, this is what ducks look like:

so I can imagine that with a longer exposure, there would be more of a definite trail for each bird with 'barbs' along the trail...

How did I miss that? Going to blame it on in/out of migraine with nutty weather shifts.

Like string theory explanation.

The cryptozoology "rods" hypothesis certainly fits the length and shape of your anomalies. The little barbs do suggest wing movement.

However, "rods" are usually spotted in video images shot against dark areas where passing insects are lit in bright sunlight. You'd think it nearly impossible to get the same effect against the more brightly lit clouds in your image.

In my experience (after cleaning many, many sensors for customers) hairs on the sensor are usually anchored at some edge or corner. Having them float free in the middle of the image isn't what you'd expect.

Rods. It is the only explanation that fits.

I would not have imagined that it could have been birds, so I learned something new. Thanks!
