Setting default to 16x9 format on K-1

Hello, is there a way to set the default frame format to 16x9 (1920x1080) on the K1? I like this format but have to convert each photo in Lightroom to this format.

Thank you...

Shooting RAW you have the choice of FF, APS-C or 1:1
Shooting jpeg you have the choice of: 1920x1280, 4224x2816, 5760x3840, or 7360x4912

Curious what you are using that format and size for? Since it requires a crop I'm not sure there is anyway to automate it in Lightroom either, but it is always possible there is something in Lightroom I don't know .

There is no setting on the camera that will do that automatically.

One can do it as a batch "Quick Develop" in the Library module. 16x9 is a standard option there. The result is a centered crop of that ratio that may be tweaked vertically in a separate action in the Develop module. I have used it to make crops suitable for HD 1080p video projection after export to 1080px vertical dimension. I suggest making virtual copies for that purpose and putting them in a collection for convenience in processing and future reference.

True, but no way to crop with the image in mind so as you say you get a centered crop which might not be ideal, and will need adjusted manually. Of course the OP's use might be fine with that. He could also export to those dimensions and get a resulting jpeg but again no way to automatically crop and get the image the way you want.

Would be interesting to know if the OP is shooting RAW or jpeg and what the use case is.

I won't put words in the OP's mouth, but a potential (and strong) use case is for interval video in the 16x9 format.

Steve
What's the default resolution for interval video?

Didn't I read the K1 does 4K as intervals? I've never tried it...

Thank you all and here are answers to the questions raised.

1. I only shoot raw and FF and this question is for photo only. Still new with the K-1 and have not used the video option yet.

2. I like the look of 16x9 (1920x1080, true HD) much more than the default 4x3 (1024x768).

3. You are right, looks like there is no way to set this as default on the camera, That is a shame.

4. I can use the 'sync' feature in LR and batch crop all photos from one. Then I have to move each image and adjust it. Still faster than changing the format one at a time.

That raises a new question. In the process of changing a photo to 16x9 and thus cropping, am I defeating the purpose of having a FF camera?

If you are cropping to 1920x1080 then I would say yes, what's the point? My cellphone takes bigger images than that.

But if you are cropping to a 16x9 ratio on the K-1 the image should be 7360x4140 and in that case, no, you are just making a slighter wider looking print. Conversely, most of the prints I make need to conform to the old standard of 8x10 in order to fit existing or easily obtained frames. So I am cropping quite a bit of the image in many cases just to make it fit the ratio of dimensions I need for the customer.
