Shutter problem?

Has anyone had any problems with their K-1 shutter? Several times now, when shooting, the mirror has gone up and locked. I've found that releasing the shutter button and pressing it down then makes it go in a flap, after which it works as normal until next time it happens. This happened yesterday when I was in multi exposure mode, and again today using single shots. I think a trip to Pentax servicing is needed.

Sounds like it, unless you somehow managed to activate mirror up mode.

G'day,

I've had issues with the K-1 shutter, or something else like the mirror, I'm not sure exactly what it is. It occurs when I use live view (LV) though it may also be happening in other drive modes as I've noticed a distinct difference in the shutter sound occasionally (eg during constant-high shooting) making me wonder whether it occurs when not using LV too. This is what it looks like:

Is this what you're seeing?

I first experienced the problem not long after picking up my K-1 in May last year. Six months later I went to the local importer/distributor for Ricoh products who do the servicing here. They couldn't find a problem so it came back. Earlier this year the same thing happened, so as a gesture of good faith they replaced my K-1 after I sent them this photo and the camera was going back to Japan. They had no explanation for it however, the same issue occurs in the new one too, so I'm not thinking it's all that isolated.

If this is the same thing you are experiencing, I first reported it at post #44 in a thread about K-1 bugs/issues started by Adam. I updated the thread a few more times and finally could post some really poor examples in post #136. The feedback identifying someone else with the issue can be found here: Post K-1 bugs/issues (feedback for Ricoh) - Page 12 - PentaxForums.com by gryhnd at post # 170. gryhnd updated in the thread as well and one or two others have mentioned it in the same thread or elsewhere on the forums. There's a video of the issue in this thread: Quality Control issues with K1 - PentaxForums.com When I cross-referenced the reports from others with this experience, the one thing I see in common is use of the battery grip.

Whether this is the problem you're experiencing or it's something else completely the best solution as you've identified and Adam has agreed to is to send it in to be checked.

Thanks for your reply. All that is recorded on my SD card is a blurry burnt out frame with normal exposed photos either side.
I'm printing out a contact sheet and will drive round to SRS at some point and take the prints and camera with me and discuss the problem with them.
