I really prefer to carry around 2-3 primes but also like zooms on occasion.

After I got my new (to me) K1 and found you could put the crop mode on the top dial, I realized you could do a few primes and get loads of coverage.

For instance:

FA 31 / 47
FA 77 / 116

That is 31-116 at crazy quality / speed.

I currently have a FA 43, but seriously considering just getting the 31 and use the crop dial.

There are really endless possibilities for prime shooting. It never occurred to me before owning the camera.

When you can see the lines on the viewfinder / screen it helps you frame. I love it. I was happy with 10 megapixels so anything above that is great.

Yes, it's a nice option even though I normally prefer to do the cropping later. Having the crop lines there is a nice guide to have (more so on DA lenses, of course), and should you ever need to, say, send images straight from the camera it's less job cropping before you shoot than having to do so through the menus on the camera.

And you get some more fps in crop mode, as well.

Yeah. With 36MP it is true you can crop quite a bit without problem, but I would leave that for post processing. If you shoot raw, you can crop as much or as little as you want, and you keep the full info in case you decide to crop differently later.
That said, I walk around with 3 primes on APSC camera and am quite happy.

Of course, if you shoot jpeg and decide to use APSC mode occasionally, go right ahead. Once upon a time 6MP was enough. Even if you crop to 15MP its still a good amount of info, for web use and even prints up to.. A4, A3 size?

Although the crop mode gives you added flexibility in a number of ways, It does not turn the 77mm lens into a 116mm one. Your object in the crop sensor frame is being recorded with the same pixel density whichever mode you use , FF; crop; or square.

is the behavior with the 77 exactly the same as with a crop body? if so I like it that way. but i also like it on FF. i have been shooting 90% film since 2013. that is how i was getting FF until I could save up for a used K1.

It will behave exactly the same, except with the added advantage of lens corrections (CA distortion correction etc) which can be used in both FF and crop modes

So after spending some quality time in Maine and California with this 2 lens combo I never even thought about having additional lenses with me. Absolutely phenomenal way to shoot as long as you don't care about how many megapixels you get.

I'd be very interested to see some of your images with both lenses, FF and crop. I like square images and I have a KP which doesn't shoot in 1:1 whereas the K1 does. Do you take any images in 1:1?

I did do square in the beginning until I realized RAW will save it as a normal PEF so it's only useful for framing purposes on the K1. I don't have any way to know what I was thinking sometimes so I stopped using square.

If you do any rudimentary PP work there is no advantage in using the square crop mode.
