Cosplayer Portraits in 85mm/1.4 on K-1

Some spring colorful photos with the Pentax K-1 and the legacy Sigma AF 85mm 1.4 EX DG HSM

In the last weeks there were two major public Japan-centric events drawing lots of cosplayers here and both days the weather was fine, so I took the opportunity for some quick snapshots. Maybe you like some of them. Not the everyday type of subject.

The young people seem to invest a lot of time and effort in making these costumes and the results speak for themselves.

Nothing like costumes and props to add zip to a photograph. I notice in the 4th, the girl spends a lot of time on her costume. The guy spent a lot of time on his gun. But I'm not drawing any conclusions about social stereotyping. We must keep an open mind about these things.

That 1.4 really helps for the shots in the park where the people are just noise in the background. Some nice costumes and nice shots.

Actually I had a nice chat with the two about how I think that sadly the best part of their costumes is the backpack the guy wears - and they agreed to that. We also were in agreement that it is a shame that this backpack can only be seen from behind, which is bad for bringing it up on photos.

Anyhow some of the best steampunk costumes I saw out there.

Is it steampunk for older people and cosplay for the younger?

I think it is all for the younger people and most older ones stick to more classic costumes including steampunk.

Then there is also wave gotik which is not linked to Japan (so not seen on the events I photographed), but seems not be limited to young people.

Excellent shots, beholder! Especially considering there was no shade. I have yet to use my 85 on cosplayers, and your photos are motivating me now.

Very nice shots. The shallow depth of field really makes the subjects stand out from the background.

And now I want an 85mm f/1.4 even more. And a full frame camera to go with it, I suppose. It won't quite be the same on my crop frame cameras. The closest thing would be a 50mm f/1.2 - the one with the unobtanium glass in it... ;(

I've used the DA*55, but I'm reluctant to take my FA*85 to a convention.
