Pentax K-1 & off camera flash

I have a Pentax K-1, my flash unit is AF-540FGZ. (also have Pocket Wizard plusIII)

Simplest way: a hotshoe extension cable that supports P-TTL.

Next option wireless triggers, starting from 'dumb' triggers that just fire the flash in manual mode, to those radio triggers from brands like Cactus and a few others that support a wider range of flash features like P-TTL, HSS or remote power control.

I use the Cactus V6II units for wireless triggering. You would need two units, one on the camera and one on the AF540. This would give you a comprehensive system as rawr says above with P-TTL; HSS; and full manual control available from the transmitter unit mounted on the K1 hotshoe. If you then wanted to add additional flash units you could buy a Cactus RF60X which has a built-in reciever. The AF540 and RF60X work very well together

If you have more than one of the Pocket Wizards, then you would place one on the camera flash mount, and the other on your off camera flash.

I use Cactus V5 units for my off camera flash needs. I would recommend either the latest in the Cactus (V6, V6II, or V6III) or the V5 units themselves if you do plan on investing in new transceivers (radio triggers).

All the above, or get another wireless/P-TTL flash to act as Master/Controller if optical control is sufficient for your needs. I posted here mainly to give you the links to my 2 "Pentax Flash Guide" documents (in the sig below here) , which cover everything you are likely to need.

The Vello P-TTL cord from B&H works well.
