Just updated, no problems here. As pschlute said, make sure the card with the update file on it is in slot 1. Also make sure the battery is fully charged. I also always format the sd card in camera first. Also make sure that the downloaded file, k1_v150.zip, is unzipped and that the update file, fwdc228b.bin is at the root level on the sd card, not inside the k1_v150 folder or DCIM folder. Hope this helps.

I cannot get the v1.5 firmware for my K1 to complete a download form the Pentax site at the moment. I keep getting a "failed" message. When I hit "retry" it then completes the download. Just not 100% certain that the file is not corrupted and do not want to brick my K1. Will try again later.

The K3 firmware download completed without a hitch twice.

Would be nice if they provided the checksum of the download files to verify their integrity. Attached is a screenshot of the SHA-256 checksum of the k1_v150.zip file I downloaded and successfully installed from.

ignatowski Thanks for the information. I will check the file. A checksum would be a good idea. One weird thing is that the K3 zipped file shows has 15% compression ratio while the K1zipped file has a 54% compression ratio.

Interestingly enough I just fired up my older laptop running Windows 8.1 and it downloaded fine. On my newer laptop running Windows 10 it crashes at 6.7 mb completed. Will retry on my other laptop later.

Zip files have built-in CRC. If the file is corrupt you'll get an error message when extracting the file or checking the integrity with a zip file tool.

Thanks, Did all that. I wonder if there is something wrong with the SDHC card I'm using. I'll try another.

You beat me to the punch with the explanation. This is almost certainly the reason these files are delivered as zip files. Having to run an external checksum was how we did it years ago.

Just updated and tried in low light. It is different. I will get a better idea this weekend how it performs in the field.

FW update probs

Each FW release seems to have same file number - i use a MAc and I have to delete the previous unzipped bin file from my downloads folder before I unzip the new one or the mac changes the file name adding a 1 or 2 etc... Also formatting the sd card in camera always installs a DCIM folder on card... so once you have unzipped a one and only bin file: they are all fwdc228b.bin - load it onto formatted sc card but also delete the DCIM folder. Then load card into camera and you wont have any problems.

Updated to v1.5 and I find the focus in low light is indeed improved. Checked with 77mm limited and it nails the focus considerably faster in low light situation. Yet to test with my 100mm macro which hunts during the low light scenario.

I was hoping that 1.5 will fix problems with Sigma 70-200 DG MACRO HSM II
no, still not good, looks like I will have to take them both to the service centre....

Again faultless update here...

Not really sure I will truly benefit... but my "Ladies" always get a cheap thrill when I tell 'em their firmware is being updated.

Yes, this is my impression. Also seems a little more focus point specific. I was able to thread through branches to get focus on a bird yesterday.

No better on moving targets, about the same as before. I suspect the additional processing horsepower of the II version helps.

I'm going to recalibrate my 150-450 to see if it changed. Not sure.

Success! Don't know what the problem was, but I used a different SDHC card, a different computer, and may have avoided a mistake I didn't notice. Anyway, I'm pleased that all is in order.
