Rolling shutter effect when using electronic shutter

Your subject doesn't have to be moving. Camera movement will do it 200mm 1/500th shot on a monopod. The relatively high shutter speed doesn't prevent it.

The same shot same shutter speed with mechanical shutter:

After this I turned of electronic shutter mode in live view.

How much did the camera MOVE? That's crazy.
I think you'd be hard pressed to recreate that level of distortion with those exposure parameters with a steady camera.

So this is why electronic shutter disables shake reduction. Rolling shutter IS shake [blur] reduction.

The "relatively high shutter speed" is misleading. The camera reads the sensor one line at a time, and regardless of the "shutter speed", the overall process takes something like 1/13-th second. Thus, the last line on the sensor comes from a view 1/13-th second after the first line .... and that is what causes the 'rolling shutter' effect.

So then it is only really usefull on a tripod. It picked up the movement of the monopod in 1/13th of a second quite well. I hadn't noticed it very much before but a wider FOV's the effect will be less apparent.

This shot of the same bottle was shot hand held and also show the effect. Not a wavy distortion but the dimensions of the bottle are off in two of them, then it is wider, then it is narrower:

The thing is, you want to use ES to avoid shutter shock, which in my experience can occur below 1/400 shutter speeds and therefore you need to be extra carefull and should always shoot also without ES as backup, in case you did not notice any issues while reviewing on the camera.

I had problems with a 135mm lens handheld, thats when I learned that lesson .

I had that problem when shooting fan blades, so I stopped shooting fan blades.

I told my doctor I broke my leg in three places. He told me to stop going there.

Thank you, thank you. I'm here all week.

Each pixel might have only been exposed for 1/500th second, but there's a difference of about 1/10s between when the top of the frame and the bottom were exposed.
