I couldn't help myself!

I ended up returning the standard SMCP-FA 50mm 1.4 and instead picked up the new HD Pentax-D FA* 50mm 1.4 SDM AW lens. Yes, it's huge but man, the IQ wide open is incredible. This is probably my new favorite lens. Hopefully got a good one as well because absolutely no AF adjustments needed to achieve critical focus. Well worth the money if you can afford it.

Good choice. Yes I agree it is worth the money because you get so much lens for it. It's a joy to use.

Here's a few sample photos in very poor light. All shot wide open at f1.4 using center focus point. Hopefully tomorrow the light will be good in the morning so I can take a walk down towards the Village.

Congratulations! It looks like it matches the K-1 very nicely.
I hope to pick one up later in the year but it gets even more expensive getting one in NZ.

I think you did the right thing. By all accounts the old FA is a nice lens, but the new DFA* 50 is in a different league.

Indeed. The night and day difference, especially wide open across the frame is spectacular. Don't get me wrong, the older 50mm held it's own, especially around f5.6, but this is stupid sharp wide open.

Here's a few more sampels from earlier this evening.

I wonder how long it will take for one to be available used...... or how long by saving $20 a month?

That lens looks to perform seriously well!

I usually finance gear by not smoking - and I don't smoke. It works like this: This lens would cost me the same as smoking 20 a day for three months. I'm sure I can afford that! If I "need" something even more expensive I'll just not smoke 30 a day instead

Ok, that works only if you actually have the funds and just need justification. But still, most of us have some "hidden" and unnecessary expenses - like smoking, or stopping for a $5 coffee on the way to work.

What is the price for this lens in NZ, out of curiosity? I would bring you one tax free, but I'm not planning a trip any time soon.

Is there a way to use mirror lockup with timed exposures? Couldn't seem to figure that out yesterday so was just using timer. The mirror lock up setting in this scenario was grayed out.

In live view the mirror is already up so it will be grayed out. In normal shooting 2s timer opens the mirror first then 2s and the shot. MUP should work in all other scenarios but you will need to use a remote if you want the camera to be still.

Or use the remote app on the phone.
