Thank you for doing this test! Pixel shift was one of the primary reasons I bought into the Pentax system. It seemed that Pentax paused in its development of this tech with the K3III. I really hope they bring forward some improvements in PS for the next K-1---improved motion correction (like Rawtherapee), faster image processing, etc.

I found that Silkypix processed the pixel shift file like Pentax DCU does it with motion correction enabled, but such behavior is undocumented. RT does a good job.

If you are printing A1 at 300dpi, that’s under 10mp - 8.5x11 with no border works out to 8.4-ish mp.
So even a plain old 24mp camera gives you loads of room to crop and still print at full resolution.
Printing full 36mp on an 8.4mp media just means you’re scaling wa-a-a-ay down, you’ll lose detail in the final image as the scaling math takes its toll

That's not what I'm doing.

He is printing a crop from the file to get the same effect as printing the whole giant print - not scaling down the original.

Detail of the zwanzig schilling bank note.

But.. the K1 requires a good lens. I guess the DFA*50 and DFA*85 would do it nicely, sharp fast 35mm / 24mm primes not available (yet?).

Actually, neither K1 nor GFX100 win. The big pixel shift winner is the Panasonic S1R with Leica 90 f2 prime lens, which outputs a 187Mpixels raw file, the most detailed and clean image, which comes with a penalty of 1 Gbytes per raw file, minimum shutter speed of 1 second (>16 seconds exposure time for 16 frames) and 14 to 18 seconds of in-camera processing time for one image. Not sure how that works in the real world outdoors, at dusk/dawn , if there is some wind, or if the tripod isn't totally rock solid. One thing I learn from this tough, is how much the Leica glass can resolve on a full frame sensor, it is simply amazing. I think none of the current FF camera systems are at the end of their potential, especially with prime lenses and if the lenses continue to get better. Currently, the bottleneck in ILC cameras is probably image processing power / speed / thermal.
