I thought again about your suggestion. I think what first put me off was that in the 1970s and 1980s I took many photos similar in subject and composition on ISO 400 B&W film which I still like a lot, and some of which I have been reworking in digital lately.
This would be an example (from 1977), OT here since it was scanned with the LS-9000 rather than copied with the K-1 as I prefer to do now.
In that style grain, contrast and a clear composition made the image. I couldn't get the same look without adding fake grain in post which just doesn't cut it for me. Following your comment, I thought I'd go for a different look, more like a B&W image taken on large format film with more smooth tones. I'm curious if it works for you that way.
