Flash, always flash imo, it does just open a can of worms however. All the best outdoor portrait work typically involves flash use, unless sometimes in the golden hour and it's not needed. Check out the work by our very own Christopher Rankin, check exif and see how often the flash is firing in the shots;

The trick is knowing the system and what you're using well enough to make the shot look like no flash really fired (like it's not obvious, hard to tell).
