Nice one! I might be tempted to print it and hang it for days when I need a smile!

Very nice! When were you there, and how much time did you spend there?. This place has been on my list for a while now.

Last Dunes Trip

The Duners (off-roaders) are beginning to show up and leave tracks, so this is probably my last trip to the dunes until next summer.

This is my first attempt at shooting the Andromeda Galaxy! I wouldn't even have dipped my toes into this if it weren't for astrotracer, so thanks Pentax!

5 40-second Astrotracer shots stacked. Heavily cropped. Rokinon 135mm f2, Pentax K-1
Amazing results. This gives me incentive to try astrophotography with the K-1. For these 5 stack shots did you re-center the star fields between exposures? Otherwise, it seems the AstroTracer would run out of sensor movent range.

Thanks for sharing,

Thanks.

Yeah, so as long as each individual shot doesn't extend past the astrotracer limit for that focal length, then you're good for the sensor movement. It will tell you the limit, I think for 135mm it was something like 2.5 minutes, but I got best results with 40 seconds or less. Anything higher star trails were forming.

And then you're right in thinking that each shot would then have the object (andromeda in my case) in a different position of the frame. I was able to get about five shots with Andromeda at 135mm before I would need to reframe the shot to keep it mostly in the center. Then the software I used to stack, DeepSkyStacker, aligned it all for me even though the difference between the first and fifth frame was quite large.

That's one disadvantage of astrotracer compared to a guide. But, for me, it's the perfect dip into something I don't really have money or time to get deeper into right now. It's easy to set up (don't have to worry about polar alignment), it's built-in so for me free, and less equipment to lug around. It really is very innovative of Pentax.

I was here twice, the first time in the spring of 2013 and the second in the spring of 2017.

The best option is to arrive in the evening at 4-5, to get to know the place it's located only few hundred meters from parking lot, choose places for shooting and shoots before sunset and sunset,
then go back to the parking lot, to eat, to relax and then return at 10-11 for a night shots.

After ending shooting again return to the parking lot, to sleep for several hours, wake up before sunrise and again return to shoot the sunrise and shoot until the sun has risen too high.

Then again return to the parking lot, to have coffee and breakfast and continue to drive to the South Coyotes, this is not far from the White Pocket, you only need to get a permit.

F2.2 does not F1.8 make Frederic, but that sure is a pretty shot.
