Close encounters of the Red Shouldered Kind...

This red shouldered hawk has been hanging around my house this week in my Oak tree... I wonder what "prey" has his attention? Rats? Mice? My new puppy?

HD PENTAX-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6ED DC AW ƒ/7.1 450.0 mm 1/400 iso400

I hurried up and got a few nice shots, I could sense he was about to bail

HD PENTAX-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6ED DC AW ƒ/7.1 450.0 mm 1/400 iso400

Yeah, he is eye'ing an upper branch and about to jump...

HD PENTAX-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6ED DC AW ƒ/7.1 450.0 mm 1/400 iso400

...there is more and it gets better, I'll post some tomorrow when I process them.

Fall on the Staunton River (DFA 15-30/pixel shift)

Obviously these are two different versions of the same photo, not sure if you all have an opinion about which works better (or maybe neither works)...

Amazing images. Hawks are so skittish. I've never had any luck getting close to hawks. Ready to see more images.

Good composition and amount of blur which helps either image. Since the colors are somewhat muted and the best parts of the photo (IMO) are the shapes and textures, I lean toward the mono version. But the color one is good too. Color version could maybe be a tad brighter.

Frost flower. There were a small field of them this day. Had I known they only occur once per year per plant, I'd have spent a lot more time shooting them.

Beautiful shot. The central third of the image from top to bottom would work nicely as a vertical.

Thanks. I think I tend to under expose my images a bit. I like the colors better when they are darker, but then of course, it is harder to see detail too.
