Wow K-amps. You really know how to make that 15-30 dance. I'm thinking of buying one. Do you have any reservations on its sharpness or performance in general. I seems a bit large.

Thx
Thanks John.

The lens is well designed to do what its supposed to do. When I had made the decision to invest in a Pentax system earlier in the year, my idea was to get a body and a 14mm Samyang and have a killer Landscape system. Since then, I have grown to dislike the Samyang's Starburst pattern. The D-FA 15-30 has beautiful Starbursts and is very sharp. CA is very low and this is a very sharp lens. My concerns are price, (Tamron version sells for $899 and has IS/VR) , and Tamron QC... in their other lenses, there is a common issue of lens decentering after some use and onion Bokeh. I have not experience that in this lens so far, if there is decentering, its very very subtle (within the margin of my informal test). Lastly, this is more of a 16mm equivalent on the wide end rather than 15mm, Tamron's FL numbers are to be taken with a grain of salt.

With all the concerns out of the way, its a great lens... period. Its gotten me some great shots, and is very sharp, I am happy with the decision.

If you are concerned about price, wait for the Irix 15mm, which seems to be an upper end Samyang. If they have given it a nice set of aperture blades, it could be a winner.... me I could not wait :-D

I have an opposite impression, it's easy with K5iis than with K-1. What settings do you use?

Well done! I just love the colors.

For Yellowstone, did you find 105mm long enough?
Well, it depends upon what you are photographing. Most of the time I was using either my 28-105 and 150-450 lens. In general, 28mm is not wide enough and 300mm not long enough. When visiting the thermal features, my K3 with the DA 12-24mm and Sigma 17-70 were usually enough. Wildlife requires more reach. I am finding the 28-105 lens pretty good but I must admit that I got it simply because I did not bring any of my film era legacy glass with me to cover wider angle scenarios. It seems to be a pretty good piece of glass. Especially when stopped down.

I took some pretty bad shots of a grizzly mom and her three cubs using my 150-450 stacked with a 1.4x and 2x teleconverter on my K3 and it was still not quite enough. I knew that the shots were going to be sub par but it was the first grizzly bear I have seen at the park in six visits. They were really out there. Add to that a bit of shimmer in the atmosphere. The combination gave me an equivalent focal length of 1980mm at f16 without stopping down. In retrospect I should have used my K1, 300mm f2.8 Sigma with the 2x converter and cropped the image. But at the time the K1 was new to me and I didn't realize how good cropped images from it looked. In the future I will not even try to get any images of wildlife this far away. Simply observe them with a pair of binoculars. In any event here is what the image looked like from my K3.

I chose the wrong night to go out

For capturing the Milky Way. It's been really clear all week, but when I finally get out the sky is clouded out.

Blue Hour this evening, shot with Sigma 10-20 @10mm FF mode, manually crop to 5147x3450 pixels, better than APSC mode 4800x3200 pixels and APSC mode has no way to shoot the full height of that tall building.

Two shots here. The first one is a shot of the Upper Falls of the Yellowstone. The second one is a crop showing only the tourists at the edge of the falls. Pretty impressive. These were taken with my d FA 150-450 art 150mm. Hand held. I got the camera last Thursday and I am liking it more and more as I use use it.

My monitor auto rotates, so every time I try to orient the photos they lay back on their sides.

It's making me dizzy . . . . . .
