Another issue I remember from my film days, Tiffen & B&W made special "Thin" skylight and polarizer filters, because some UW lenses vignette with a normal filter, and others do it with a normal filter behind the stock hood, because just the filter was added behind the hood... worth mentioning on the K-1 thread, since I see many here testing old lenses on K-1. All lenses I am testing, I remove all filters and hoods, for the quick test at least.
Hoods are nice to have on Tele, but for most wides or ultra wides, I just hold my free hand over side of lens that the sun is coming from to cast a shadow over the front element, usually works as well or better than hoods, heh heh.
I think somebody had a gizmo that mounted into your flash shoe with a flex arm like and a black playing card that you could swing into place for similar function.
Lemme see if I can find a pic... yup! B&H even still sells a current version of the thing. These work surprisingly well at reducing flare without vignette in my experience, and are certainly better than no lens hood at all.
