Beautiful photos all, FS! I found the bird at its birdbath surrounded by green especially captivating. I'm mourning the passing of this summer, which went by all too quickly.

Finally, you are getting closer to moon shots I like.....most of it is not visible...just keep improving and soon all of it will be black!

Here is a little birdie I liked but the shot is pretty noisy. I really don't think the K1 is all that much better than my K5IIs at high ISO low light shots......but it it tons better at AF even in low light.

It's a nice shot, but honestly, you shoot a lot in crop mode and if you do that, you will have almost equivalent performance to your K5 IIs. The only way you see high iso benefit is if you use a longer lens/get closer and use more pixels in your image.

A longer lens is not an option since Sigma dumped Pentax with its 600mm zooms. Getting closer is not much of one either since it is so humid outside here that ducks are staying in the lake to keep dryer.

My best option for shooting out my windows is to stop forcing shots in poor light, but you always gotta try!

I'm going to experiment with in-camera noise reduction and see what happens? I don't expect good results, but I'm gonna try it.

The K-1 has re-invigorated my photography a little, and that alone was worth the price of admission. I used to love to hike and see what nature has to offer... then I got a littler older, and lazy, and maybe a little negative or off put by rapid advance in tech.


It is easy to tell yourself that everything has been done before, and probably done better than I will do it, and with better equipment, so why bother? That is like a form of depression I guess. We have to remind ourselves it's about living through the process, the experience and pride of ownership so to speak. Now, I look forward to doing those kinds of things again and seeing what the K-1 and I can do together.


I'm not saying only a K-1 can do this. It just happened to motivated me (prolly to justify the expense, heh) There is more to photography than the equipment. There is something about the process itself as well. Weather it is stalking wildlife to capture a moment that no one else saw, or using equipment like plate film camera with ground glass to pre-vision a scene. Live view reminds me a little of that process, and the tilt screen makes it easier on my neck. Darkroom work was rewarding in that way, watching a print come to life in a tray of developer. If you have never done it, there is nothing like it! (well, maybe a polaroid) I don't miss sitting in the dark breathing chemicals though...


I guess what I am trying to say, is I am grateful for those that I can share with and enjoy my pics and theirs, and for having the equipment and motivation to go out and capture an image again.

Rondec, I took your advice and mounted the Tammy 70-200 2.8 a few minutes ago and made myself go out in the nasty elements and try some FF shooting. It's pretty easy to get close to my squirrels here, unlike birds they do not run and hide...since I usually have treats galore for them.

FF - f8 1/125 handheld ISO 4000 @ 200mm Strong backlighting but I was able to lighten the squirrel acceptably.


FF - f8 1/125 handheld ISO 12800 @200mm "Hey Rupert...where are the treats?"


I had noise reduction set to "Auto" ....even on the 12800 ISO shot it looks acceptable to me?

Wish I could always get close enough for FF shooting, but most often I can't.

Before I put away the Tamron I shot this of my grandson who is visiting. It was in a dark unlit living room shot wide open.

f2.8 1/80 handheld ISO 12800 @ 200mm


I haven't used this lens much since I got it a couple of months ago. I think it must be a really nice lens, and the color is very good too. I need to use it more!
