Thanks so much K-amps, that means a lot... always drool over your posts as well, wish I could travel more, but still schlepping it out at work makes that hard.

In full disclosure, my Tamron was bought by me through Ebay, via National Camera Exchange, and was supposedly a Tamron Factory Refurbished unit, with an extended 7Yr warranty to make the buyer feel better.

I figured, hey, if it is really refurbished, then someone actually complained about something, then a human being had to look at it, test it and fix it, which my assumption at the time was this was great, another level of quality control at a cheaper price! Winning!

I never used the lens for close macro work on the K-5, and never via live view, but when I got the K-1, I started to use this lens for that a lot and that is when I noticed the focus was painfully slow but only at close distances. At first I blamed K-1 and Live View, I'd have to half depress the shutter a bunch of times to get focus to move.

Then (Facepalm) I finally got a clue and kicked it over to manual focus for the first time and actually felt the stiffness of the focus at the near end. Oiy! I didn't like the idea of straining my K-1 focus motor and immediately contacted NCE for warranty procedure and sent it in to them, who in turn sent it to Tamron.

Tamron said it was a "Cracked Cam Barrel due to impact damage" and that it had to be my fault. They claim they discounted the repair to $240, which prolly is a discount, but still a bit of a slap in the face for a mint lens without a scratch on it. I swore I never dropped it. They didn't care. I Okay'ed the repair IF they sent back the replaced parts.

The repair was fantastic and professional, still not a mar on it to prove disassembly, and worked like a champ. I looked at the old parts with a magnified LED lit loupe, I could NOT find the crack anywhere. What I DID find, was a random squiggle scratch on the inner cam barrel, that looked like a mouse trail in a maze. Then it dawned on me...the damn thing must have had a screw or one of the many little balls they inset as bearing surfaces come loose and it was jammed up between the barrel layers causing the stiff focus!

So, as far as I'm concerned (just a guess, but I feel I am allowed to as the aggrieved party), some tech fibbed to cover his butt, prolly because he felt pressure from management not to do too many warranty repairs, and passed on their problems to me.

Sigh... I apologize for wasting bandwidth with this story... again... I even have a thread on it over in the warranty issues area... but sometimes ya feel obligated to fully disclose stuff.

Would I buy it again? Yup. Cost of doing business so to speak. I admire the optic's crew's work at Tamron that engineered this lens. It's not their fault that the company they work for is blowing their customer service rep. You can't beat the price/performance, even with a random repair.

If I were to do it again, I'd add the "accidental damage" type warranty and still count myself ahead.

Yup, agree on all your points Norm. Ya pays your money and takes your chances. As the consumer, I feel it our duty to fellow consumers to push back if/when we can, for the good of everyone else.
Letting them get away with stuff too easily just perpetuates the behavior.

Finally, I caught the sucker in flight reasonably sharp!

I prolly should try with fill flash to help try freeze motion, but I'm not a fan of flash... especially in the Pentax eco system...anyway, tada!

Heavily cropped, this one really is at 100% pixel peeping level, but had to stay zoomed out to keep the erratic action inside the frame.

The Tamron doing it's thing, pinch hitting in macro mode, which it does scarily well.

K-1 Sunset Panorama:

Pentax K-1 SMCP-FA 31mm f/1.8 ASPH Limited - ISO 100- f/11 1/60th

This is a bit of a rough draft - there are some stuff ups with photoshops merging, the mistakes are evident in the right half of the image visible on the horizon - this, is why I prefer to hand blend panoramics.

Thanks DimC! And K-Amps too! Sometimes a picture really is worth 1000 words, so here is the original view, uncropped, to give you an idea of when I said it was a pixel peep level crop, I really meant it.

The K-1's (or any camera's ) ability to give clean images at Pixel Peeping level is often poo poo'd by those that say "who needs that? just pixel peepers and measubaters" don't really get that sometimes, you want or HAVE to shoot wider than you want to get the subject in frame, then work with a crop that might be at pixel level. This is why I never got cozy with the first generation APSC 24mp sensor. And also why the new KP results have got my attention... this might have been a better shot with a KP and the same lens... less cropping and more pixels on the subject... I wouldn't have said that about the previous gen 24mp sensors.

Vs/ Crop for comparison. The level of detail still retained at this level crop with the K-1 just totally blows my mind.
