K-1 and F 1.7x AF Adapter
800 ISO or 1600 ISO, ƒ8 , AV

We saw Starlings yesterday but they kept well away from the Grackles.

The rest of today's images
These guys hang out with the Grackles. The Gracks may be foreigners but according to the Redwinged Blackbirds they fit right in with the flock.

The detail you can maintain even with a crop on a small bird at a fair distance is phenomenal. It's more difficult, or perhaps even impossible to get the image, but if you get it, it's better, compared to any other Pentax body.

Most excellent images! Having been chasing those little critters in the latter shots recently, I know how hard they can be to nail. Well done!
Looks like the DA55 is a keeper too.
Eric
Thank you, I get the gardens when they first open to try and catch them early. It is a whole lot of trial and error for me with a lot more error than trial it seems. The DA55 does seem to be a keeper. I did not get a hood with it but I believe the hood would be useless on the K-1 anyway especially wide open.

A couple in K-1 Square mode with the DFA28-105@105 and f/5.6

Regards, acoufap

P.s. I'm very pleased with the results I get with this lens!

I'm confused.

Whilst this thread is full of wonderful images, why are some images taken either in full frame or cropped? i would have thought that buying a full frame camera meant that all images were, FF?

I'm genuinely curious, I have a K1 cw 28-105mm arriving soon to review and I'd like to get the best out of it.

My explanation: There's considerable interest in everything that the FF K1 can do, 1) with new FF lenses; 2) with legacy FF lenses; 3) with APSC lenses either @ FF or crop mode = can it produce images with IQ competitive to images taken with a K3 II or KP when using the same APSC lenses? One would expect that the IQ of a K1 image taken in crop mode would be at least as good as a K5 II image taken with the same lens, possibly better at very high ISO or if taken with pixel-shift. This thread is for exploring or showing off the potentials of the K1, not necessarily in FF mode only..

In addition to the technical approaches WPRESTO mentioned there are especially artistic reasons why cropping is used. It's an important part of image composition.

The camera is only a tool for us photographers and bears a lot of restrictions. Especially the sensor is fixed in it's dimensions and ratio. This should not be our main reason to develop images in this given ratio, mostly 3:2 or 4:3. But of course many people do so.

In post #8755 I showed two images taken in FF Square mode. I used the square ratio from my artistic perspective and not because the DFA28-105 could have captured bad technical results in full FF mode!

Trying astrophotography with DA*50-135mm F2.8

Probably not the best lens to try. Anyway, I gave it a go. Needless to say this is in crop mode.

I should add that while the K1 is full frame, it is designed to also be used with APS-C lenses.

Also, some APS-C zoom lenses cover the full frame circle near their telephoto end.

Anyway, this is from Daylesford, Victoria, Australia.
