Not sure how many of you think the same way... but worth sharing maybe:
I find with a skittish subject, I'll take a "not so ideal, but better than nothing shot from a distance" first, then creep up, take another, and then when I am feeling I have nothing to loose, I go for it and get in as tight as I can.
Phase 2 of this mind set is how I handle birds, with one addition, I'll stealth up to a bird, this can take quite some minutes before they get used to your presence, BUT...my if intent is to get a BIF shot, I'll be ready for when the subject decides he's had enough of me and takes off... snap snap snap.
I know it could be considered a "cheat", and PITA might not approve, but no harm done, and maybe I've actually helped the health of the critter by inducing some cardio aerobic activity. Heh heh.
Snuck up on this busy bee, I think this was as close as I got before he buzzed my ear and let me know I was not welcome.

Gonna be gone a few days...taking a trip out to Big Bend and hoping to get a few shots of the desert in bloom...maybe even a few critters and mountain squirrels?
Loading up this morning for the trip and
checking all my gear to make certain I am well equipped. It is a beautiful area, and our 8th trip out to the area. A decent photographer can be delighted there with the many wonderful shooting opportunities. An old squirrel shooter...not so much...but maybe lady luck will smile on me?

Best Regards!
Glad you are OK. Looking at other people's shots of big bend, it looks like you are in for some pixel shift wide angle heaven! Can't wait to see what you come up with.
Bringing your best primes and tripod right?
(... or maybe you could get Frederic to meet you there with the Soligor... )
Have fun!
