Dear K-amps,

I am but a beginner, so my opinion may not have any professional weight to it, but your Pictures are very beautiful, the Aurora lights above the Hotel, that whole scenery is magical, also the waterfall from behind it. I find it difficult to find such beautiful spots without other People hopping around in my Pictures - do you take your Pictures at odd times of the day/night, or just simply wait Long? It Looks like you have a plan of what you would like to do. Would be greatful if you could share some of your thoughts.

Best regards, Isbjörn
Dear Isbjorn:

Thank you so much for your kind words, I don't think I deserve them since I do not make the scenery, I merely push a button. My admiration is for the one who made it. :-)

I am a hobbyist like yourself, not a professional and I use a combination of brute force, technique and some processing to get my shots right. Sometimes its pure dumb luck,,,, but there is one thing that is repeatable for us Landscape guys... its the timing. I shoot at times when there are fewer people in general, e.g. before Sunrise/ Sunset/ night time. Almost never shoot at touristy times like 9am to 5pm. I will use Long exposures, or wait between people passing by and sometimes delete them with content aware or crop them out. Sometimes I just fail... e.g. Skogafoss, there were just too many people there to get a decent shot. Didn't even feel like opening my tripod there . I take lots of shots and always bracket to protect the highlights, since with the K1 I can recover shadows. My brackets are usually -1, -3 and -5ev. I usually end up using one -3ev frame for the final shot. Sometimes i will need the -1 and -5 shot. I throw away a lot of -1 shots because i find a lot of times the highlights are clipping with the Sun in the frame.

Hope this helps... keep trying and experiment and good luck
regards,
Arif

Choices choices... back lit, no flash, or flash w/soft bonnet?

As they sit here posted pretty much OOC, I prefer with flash, but, I "think" with some more PP, I think I could make non-flash shot acceptable, but probably not totally better than with flash, at least for my taste. (the dodge & burn tools in photoshop, and some levels curve adj I think would do it)

Thoughts?

Some pictures from Havana Harbor. Unfortunately weather was not so great.

In the first one there is the Empress of the Seas, a cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International.

Thanks Bob! Looks like you will be heading out of fall colors and into the winter gray days soon. Should be interesting to catch some of the dynamic range when the white stuff falls, and how the critters fare.
Looking forward to those new adventures and you sharing them,
Eric
