If the timing belt goes... it's described as I believe "a not safe engine", no kidding.
I try to avoid buying an 'interference fit' engine. I remember a secretary I worked with many years ago didn't change her timing belt, well after the factory recommendation, on her Honda Civic. It broke and her pistons interfered with her valves, causing much the same issue as the pictured piston.
An expensive job.
Me....I find it wise to follow the maintenance schedule in a vehicle's owners manual. Like the Fram oil filter TV advert of a few decades ago...where the mechanic says...you can pay me now...as he holds a $ 4 filter...or you can pay me later...showing an engine on a hoist.
