Oh, they're coming downhill, Dave - 31mm on the DFA 28-105.
A CPL filter means the glare/highlights are suppressed and the colours are true.

Some of the locations around the course will be great as backdrops, others not so much but they will offer shots of the athletes displaying effort/emotion - the finish line, the feeding area, top of a climb ... the solution is of course to move about constantly during the day.
If you set up a tripod and park yourself in the same spot you're going to get hundreds of identical shots, people don't want to see that.
A lot of motor racing photography suffers from that, IMHO - same bend, same cars with one wheel over the line, lap after lap.
