But please, pretty please, never, I say NEVER, ever, put something in a single malt Scotch Whisky !
The consensus held by the majority of whisky connoisseurs, is to nose, have a wee sip neat... then to add a few drops of good Highland burn water, thus opening up the whisky and letting its full complexity develop in the glass.

In your experience how many drops should be added and can you taste the difference? Does it depend on the whisky? I have Laphroaig 10yo, Ardbeg 10yo and Lagavulin 16yo to experiment with.

K-1 Mark II
Sigma 150-500

Next time I will be better prepared. I made mistakes this time that well help me in the future.

Started with 3600 images.
First pass took it down to 186. 3 more passes and I edited 27.
Eventually ended up with 23 I am happy with.

No not really, anything from a few drops to a wee splash, but the water is important, preferably not a chlorine/fluoride loaded tap water.

Aye, some of the cask strengths can usually benefit from a larger or bigger splash.

What time you want me round?

My stock phrase with good Islay malts is... "if you cannae chew it, it isnae peaty enough".

Wow, thanks so much! Those are exactly what I needed to see. Dang, do you work for Ricoh? I think you just made them some money... my poor wallet. Heh.
I "think" I'm going to try and sell some stuff to help fund it. Y'all may see my Tamron 400mm F4 show up in the classifieds soon. I hate to let it go, it is as sharp (maybe even sharper) as the DA*300mm but my aging eyes need the autofocus. Thanks again for the post, that really did it for me.
Eric
Ah ah no I don't work work Ricoh, even though I'd love to! Sorry for your wallet, but I'm sure you won't regret it .
The only cons when compared to the 300 is the light transmission which is a little bit less good, making you loose something like a half stop. That's the price to pay for aberrations free photos with a zoom, I guess. But you have much more reach, you can zoom, AF is great (even though I find the DA*300 AF perfectly fine), and you have a focus limiter.
IQ-wise, I did several tests comparing the D-FA at 270mm (max focal length for the f/4.5 aperture) vs the DA* and even when looking à 100% I'm not able to say which lens took which shot. At 310 I found the DA* a little bit better, but the D-FA is still perfectly fine. In real world use, I don't pay attention to the focal length, and I'm always satisfied.
I keep the DA* for its low weight and size, but for now I always took the D-FA no matter the conditions ^^.

Again if you want to play with a few RAWs just tell me, I can upload some.

On the K3, heavy crop (60%):

1/1000sec - f/8 - ISO800 - 450mm

You're probably right. I had the chance at a tasting to buy it, but they didn't offer to taste it, so I didn't buy it... But please, pretty please, never, I say NEVER, ever, put something in a single malt Scotch Whisky ! Should it be water, ice or everything else ! The taste is so delicate, that you will dilute it... Believe me, I begun with ice (mea culpa maxima). The taste is so different and so good without ! (I'm Pentaxian, beerian, whiskyan, ginian and rhumian )

But the 12 year Balvenie is so smooth compared to the rare Talisker Dark Storm which I like too for it's salty taste...
I asked this very question that night, that if you look on the actual bottle, David Stewart (the maker etc) says to put a splash of water in, to 'release' the flavours. Ross Blainey said indeed there is some truth to this, but ultimately the decision lies with the user, if they want to add lemonade to it so be it, just leave mine as is!
I sometimes have one small cube of ice in mine I quite enjoy the two taste experiences, to begin with it tastes fairly neat, by the end more akin to having one with a splash of water. But I don't always do that, mostly neat, it just depends on weather and mood etc.

I have ordered a 'Glenfiddich Project X' to which I will surely photograph and display here in the near future.

The whiksy night in general was fun, however all of the whiskies were on the sweeter side (all being from William Grant & Son's line). Personally I favour the far more peaty and smokey whiskies, Lagavulin, Laphroig Triple Wood etc, those are my favourite. It was good to taste a variety of sweeter ones however, something I wouldn't normally gamble and buy a bottle of. I will definitely grab a 12yr doublewood or caribbean 14yr in the near future should a good deal be found!
