Thanks, I was kinda stuck here, small building, short on time, no flash and tripod rules, just had to go with what I had available, breath slowly, lean on a wall and squeeze one off like a marksman.

The emblems of mortality and immortality were seldom used after the 18th Century, but I am able to give you a wee bit of insight into them...

Left Top, Coffin - The shape was usually realistic and is normally recognisable, in 18th Century as here, one coffin was often placed in a row of symbols.

Middle top, Death's Head - The skull was used to represent death, a reminder that death comes to everyone. Its is often shown as here, with deep eye sockets and triangular nose.

Top Right, Hour Glass - This indicates the passing of time and can be portrayed either vertical or a horizontal position. It is usually carved realistically and it's plump shape lent itself to carving in high relief.

Lower Left, Bones - These often accompanied the Death's Head (Middle Top) and were shown like this crossed.

Lower Middle, Deid Bell - The Deid Bell was rung to give notice of funerals and at the funeral itself.

Lower Right, Sexton's Tools - The spade and the turf cutter, the latter has a triangular blade and very often the tools are shown crossed, as here.

Hope you find this additional information interesting.
Kerrowdown,

Thank you very much for the detailed information. There was a lot of symbolism back then and being able to interpret the meaning ..as you can and did...brings life to history of the past.

Cityscape time I see.

This is a 3 shot pano, captured in portrait orientation with the D-FA 15-30.

Last shot I posted of this bloom was from the DA*300mm... I'd say it wins on sharpness, but the Takumar 35mm F2 wins on crazy bokeh, and the sharpness really doesn't suck either, especially considering it's wide open...
I just find the way it separates the background like it's miles and miles away fascinating and pleasing. I'm prolly alone on this and normal people hate it, but hey, I never claimed to be normal.

Interesting effect on the background. SUGGESTION: try cropping off all but roughly the lower right quarter of the image = just the open blossom there, more or less centered with plenty of surround. The background bokeh there looks a little less "bubbly" and consequently less distracting. I find the bright spots at far upper left in the image as posted too distracting = an alternate center of interest that isn't the point of the image.

Thanks for the suggestion WPRESTO, I may give it a try if the resolution doesn't fall apart... oddly enough, I liked the bubbly bokeh as much or more than the subject. I may be in the minority on that. I guess I am as probably stated before, a victim of the print age and always envision a photo as a print for wall hanging.

I imagine your way would make a more focused subject for quick viewing of a well defined subject, while I would argue my way, which intentionally includes the unopened buds in the focal plane and took some work to do so, would hopefully draw you in, and give a more interesting, fuller subject to examine on a wall for a longer period. Or people would just get nauseous looking at mine and keep on walking. LOL!
