It’s a comparatively small railway station, but the interest is on the walls of the entrance hall. All of those pictures are comprised of hundreds of tiles.


The K-1 image stabilisation does pretty well, handheld at such a slow shutter speed. To look closer, click on the image, to go to Flickr.

Portuguese seem to have a long tradition and fondness for creating murals using blue-on-white tiles. We saw numerous examples during our visit to the Azores Sometimes they are informative, sometimes memorials, sometimes guide maps (what you can see from this high vantage) and many of them are based on historical events. There were ome notably large historical tile-murals in a library we went into, but nowhere near as grand as those in the image you posted, .

THE SMALL EXAMPLE BELOW IS NOT A K1 IMAGE. Notice that a mistake was made with one tile which was rotated 180 degrees so it is not aligned correctly.

Flash. Cactus RF60x with a Blue gel filter and possibly a Magmodsphere as well (I can't recall however as I took some shots with and without). I dialled the camera WB to 10,000k which gives most of the frame a strong warm tint, and the blue flash brings the people tones back to a more normal place.

Oh and another one from the session before, this time a skin correcting orange gel applied to the flash and camera WB set to around 3200k.

***These Golden Orb Weaver's seem to have a habit of putting a web across our hiking trails over night.
They seem to grow bigger around here (well fed) and can get as big as your open hand!
They are venomous but the bite won't kill you... unless you are allergic or something maybe?

I knew something was going on there. I wouldn't have thought of that. Well done. It lets your models get separated better from the background .

That is a very richly textured work of art. I should try to direct you to tiles done by children that we came across on the Azores. Very young children. What the images lack in artistic merit they more than make up in innocent charm.

When we encountered the tile decorations, I wondered if it went back to Islamic influence. There is a very longstanding tradition of using decorative tiles in the Islamic world, although not in the form of realistic images such as those both of us encountered.
