***These Golden Orb Weaver's seem to have a habit of putting a web across our hiking trails over night.
They seem to grow bigger around here (well fed) and can get as big as your open hand!
They are venomous but the bite won't kill you... unless you are allergic or something maybe?
They are certainly impressive when you're walking along looking at stuff to the side, and suddenly they're right in front of your nose.

Nice shot.

Great flower Frederic with the STFU, but that moon left me feeling BLUE.
I shutter (pun) to think what Rupert would say.

I think that's also called a "tufted orb weaver" from the hairy segments on its legs. FYI: Silk from one of these big spiders, I believe the species found on Caribbean Islands but not in Florida, were once used to make cross-hairs for telescopic gun sights. I think the individual strands are among the thickest made by spiders, and of course are very strong per unit weight. If you did face-plant into a web, it would definitely slow you down

Thanks Ted! I've come really close several times. The worst one though wasn't a spider... I was walking along looking up for things to photograph, and spiders I guess, and stepped right over a fat cottonmouth sunning himself on the trail.

An old photo hiking buddy walking behind me had stopped several paces back and called out to me: "You know that branch you just hopped over?" Me "Yeah?" Him "it wasn't a branch!"

"Enchanted Forest" = right on the money. Wonderful moody, mysterious image, a walk in the woods at once inviting and vaguely threatening.
