Interesting, I'd be keen for you to elaborate.

Through the grapevine I hear these things about the K-1ii;

1) IQ not as good
2) Colours worse (duller)
3) Dynamic PS is cool, but not necessary, stand PS is still king.
4) AF is better, but really only for targets moving away from the shooter (ie bum shots lol).

I've considered the upgrade, but more from an additional warranty perspective than the features. What are you finding that is 'better'? (no troll, serious question).

1) IQ is fine for me. Plus no more of that annoying shutter shock problem. SR seems to work better too. Which is important as I get older and more shaky. Some shots that I took at 1/12 second yesterday turned out fine.

2) Dull colours can be easily fixed on post processing. RAW images always look dull to me anyway.

3) Dynamic Pixel Shift works as advertised. People can choose to use it or not as they please.
4) AF is a bit better all around. As good as the K1 is the K1-II is a bit better in all situations. It may not be the best action photography camera out there, but you can certainly learn to use it and get good results. I use a lot of manual focus lenses and often turn off manual focus on my AF lenses. Focus confirmation seems a bit better than on the K1 and the K1 is already pretty good in that department too.


Because I wanted to pay off my credit cards and had to pay school taxes last month, I chose not to get my K1 upgraded and it seems the window is now closed in the US. I kind of regret not just getting it done anyway. It seems that when using the K1 I have to take more care and use the TAv mode more than I want to. Especially when using the D FA 28-105 lens.

Exactly why I never bought one. It's not fast, and it's not small. But more power to those who can carry it. It really should come with a case and shoulder strap. It's too big for camera bags.

Hm - I did it ... and use a mechanical mule (Burley Travoy). It even can lay down ...



And it can carry a lot more as you can see. Drag it and go by feet or attach it to a bike. I love it. But that may not fit for everybody and of course there may be terrain where it simply doesn't work.


Backpack LowePro Vertex 100 AW. You can even put the whole Lens with attached hood in the middle and place the camera at the right or left side. Some more room for lenses and other things.

So finally I can contribute to this thread. I bought a used K1 with just about 6000 clicks. To be honest, it looks like almost brand new to me.
After work I took a few shots near my office this afternoon.

I've used an old Tokina AT-X pro 2.8/28-70 SV. Probably the performance is nowhere near the recent Pentax 2.8/24-70 but I got it cheap some years ago.
Well, besides some moderate fringing (easy fix in PP) and some distortion I can't complain!

Here are 2 of the first shots with the new camera.

Yeah, I did a lot of research until I found it. It's a Burley Travoy (added it to my post). Bought as a set including raincoat and bag where it completely fits in. You shouldn't try to sit on this device because it only can carry up to 23kg - self weight 4.5 kg. The tripod chair is a Walkstool 55 - carries you up to 200kg and is availlable in different heights.

I did not know the tree was a vine maple, but yes, the colors are special.

Very common here, was my favorite bow wood when I built self-bows. The colors are much more vibrant than the big leaf maple, IMO.

Thanks Bruce! Of course you are right, the background has a lot to do with focus lock and track, but even still, I think technique has a lot to do with it too, because there are people who blame the camera even with a clean background. I was just being chirpy and having fun. No oncoming weaving bicycles for me. ;-) Using Select 9, and CAF with the DFA 150-450mm set with the range limiter to 6m-Infinity does make it nice and quick. It makes the old DA55-300mm on my old classic K-5 seem like a snail in reverse by comparison.
