Not a fan of the ergonomics or the menu systems but the output is quite good as well as the advanced functions it provides. Since my Pentax 85 mm lens just died (was a good run) I will most likely be picking up the Sony 85 1.8 and be giving that sweet eye AF a try on my future shoots. I am also planning to pick up the Fujifilm X-T3 but mostly for video. If Pentax had actually released that rumored new 85 1.4 I probably would have just ordered that but since they are taking forever I will just give Sony and Fuji a try in the meantime.
P.S.
If anyone knows and can recommend a good place to send my FA 85mm for a possible repair just message me please. I believe the AF motors have gone bad.
I have heard and have strong suspicions myself that Pentax's Face Detection AF Mode in LV is actually 'Eye' mode, just that it wraps a box around the head of a person instead of the eye. But if you test it, and shoot, and check eye sharpness even when shooting very wide open, it does indeed seem to prioritise the eyes the most for where focus lies. This makes sense because FD will be looking for eyes for the system to work, it's possibly just wording and Pentax being 'user friendly' by calling it Face Detection. I wonder if you used Face Detection during any of your shoots?
Furthermore... Face Detection is the ONLY mode in whereby once you get a lock and focus on the face, if you press the 'OK' button it will zoom into that face thus allowing you to check eye focus more closely. This differs from other LV focusing modes in that hitting the 'OK' button will zoom to the middle of the screen, regardless of where focus was locked onto, with FD mode it will zoom to where the focus/face is at, even if it's towards the edges of the frame/picture. Handy!
