Given the state of religions this side of the pond, such a monumental (literally) expenditure of resources would seem un-sustainable.

True dat. Now in North America it is not churches, but sports stadiums that are the new opiate for the masses. And they are going for a lot more that this cathedral is costing. 30 year old stadiums are demolished because they are "out of date" and replaced with billion dollar venues. The new Yankee Stadium in NYC cost $2.3 billion with taxpayers picking up $1.2 billion of that. At least the cathedral will have a roof and cost less than 10% of that

Sports is the new religion. But the good thing is, I personally don't have to give them a cent. Well, except for the part where millions went into building the Sky Dome. 570 million in tax payer dollars, then sold to Rogers (a cable TV company) for 31 million. The funny thing is, if someone would come up with a plan to eradicate homelessness and child poverty for 570 million, it would be turned down as way to costly. Welfare for those who can afford $100 seats, paid for by those of us who can't afford to go to the games, or believe the money would be better spent elsewhere.

This is getting waaay off topic, but... heck, I couldn't even afford all the bridge tolls and parking to go to a Yankee's game more than once in a blue moon anymore. The subway is the only real way to go, unless you got C notes to roll up and smoke.
