It was 1/320s, Merv, since he's playing, at f1.8 - ISO ended up at 4000, so that tells you how little light there was.
The second pic (which I see now was actually taken with the DA*55) shows what I've discovered in the few years I've been attempting photography.
Turn up to a sports or any other kind of performance event early, and get pics with the extraordinary access that might be possible if you get them practicing or setting up beforehand. Musos will do a sound check, ball games like AFL football the teams will do a warmup with a ball involved. Know someone, or turn on the charm, and you can be standing amongst them.
Instead of a shot with a tele lens from the twentieth row, I was able to shoot from the stage area itself, having talked the venue's sound tech into holding an LED light sabre just off camera. If I turned the camera round to the seats, there'd be no one there, but someone looking at the pic doesn't know this.
You can't do this while there's a crowd there.
