A Real Town Garden

Look what I found tucked away amongst the old buildings of Edinburgh, where a wee shaft of light does manage to get through.

I'm still enamored with Frangipani. Cannot grow it here so thanks for the occasional fix.

It was 1/320s, Merv, since he's playing, at f1.8 - ISO ended up at 4000, so that tells you how little light there was.

The second pic (which I see now was actually taken with the DA*55) shows what I've discovered in the few years I've been attempting photography.

Turn up to a sports or any other kind of performance event early, and get pics with the extraordinary access that might be possible if you get them practicing or setting up beforehand. Musos will do a sound check, ball games like AFL football the teams will do a warmup with a ball involved. Know someone, or turn on the charm, and you can be standing amongst them.

Instead of a shot with a tele lens from the twentieth row, I was able to shoot from the stage area itself, having talked the venue's sound tech into holding an LED light sabre just off camera. If I turned the camera round to the seats, there'd be no one there, but someone looking at the pic doesn't know this.

You can't do this while there's a crowd there.

My family left Edinborough in the 19th Century, yet looking at some of their old photos and seeing some of your present-daypostings, I am glad that the Scots have preserved much of old Edinborough--keep snapping, I enjoy them all--reminds of my Great-grandmother (who was 96 when she died in 1964) and her deep accent I couldn't always understand.

Awww. cute dog there. But, Laddie, you named him after a Gin. I would have thought a Scotch (preferably a single malt) would have held the day. Maybe my next dog will be named "Aberfeldy" (Abe for short--nice single malt from the Dewer's distilleries).

However, presently I have my big guy "Howard" (below is a typical action shot of him)
