All I know is she is never seen sitting down at home without knitting needles in her hands.
Originally posted by dlh A while back I posted a rant about "too much post-processing". Here's a good example of what I was NOT saying (everyone seemed to assume that I was arguing against any post-processing at all). BruceBanner set the shot up carefully, knew what he was doing with the lighting and the camera, and then used artful post-processing to make the vision complete. A beautiful picture without TOO MUCH post-processing. See, if he'd like cranked up the saturation on the natural amber color of the leaves to look like a tart's makeup, it would have been trash, but because of his artful touch, it's, well, art! Beautiful.
Thanks! However I should point out this particular image saw absolutely
no post processing outside of the camera, it was a RAW file and before generating a Jpg from it I added that vignette in camera
Why this image was so interesting to me was because I spent the morning experimenting with various tricks to generate a well done portrait Autumn shot with the intention that it wouldn't require much if any PP (because long term the idea is to replicate this for commercial shoots for families etc).
Normally if you shoot with Auto White Balance in Autumn the images fall flat, dull and lifeless, because the camera see's far too much yellow and red and fights back with blue, and thus you miss out on that Autumn vibe. So it is often recommended to bail out of AWB and into something else for Autumn, something warmer. Problem is when doing that with people their skin tones can start to look very yellowy and sickly.
I shot this particular image at 7500k (IIRC) and because I was using a decent amount of flash fill the 'cool white' light of the flash counteracts the 7500k and starts to bring her skin to being a more natural looking tone. No flash and she would have had yellow skin (as well as not illuminated well enough).
You can use gels on the end of flashes, such as 1/2 CTB (Color Temperature Blue) which also assists with clawing back some more natural fleshy tones when boosting the WB of the camera, however I was using only speedlights and not strobes and using gels can kill a lot of flash power. So this experiment here was basically 'How high can I push the WB warmth temperature in camera and use bare flash and still get natural looking skin tones. I learned that you can actually change how AWB works in camera, steering it to having a more warmer bias (but this wasn't enough, images still not quite what I was after). 10,000k was too much (even with bare flash to assist, skin still yellowy), around 7500k worked quite well.
The shot came out so well I am afraid to edit it properly in post! Watch this space, I'll ruin this shot in a couple days time

Not so sure about the more extreme Lensbaby stuff, but it's growing on me in reasonable amounts. LOL!) but I also find with the K-1 RAW files, if I expose to the left, which I normally do, and then when in PP I usually bring up the White Level and Shadows instead of the Exposure, that the colors pop on their own are almost too much and I have to knock the saturation DOWN sometimes. I seems to me that it just depends on how you get there. I guess I what I am trying to say is you don't ever have to touch the Saturation slider to get colors that look "tarted up" so to speak. I use a calibrated monitor and try to replicate the scene as I remember it most of the time, unless it's an artsy shot.

Thanks! (I think...
