Brisbane Festival performer around sunset

I went to capture the light show but didn't bother.

I see a performer being 'lit' during a 'show', I'd say mission successful!

---------

Bridge SOOC

Straight Out Of Camera for this one. Quite cool what you can get when you play with the options in the camera hehe.
I had to use a f2.8 shot for this tho as the f8 shot was showing dust spots and that's a step too far for the in camera development tools.

Goes without saying I will edit the other versions I took properly too, but I kinda like this neat little SOOC

I'm like a moth to the light when it contrasts with the background.

I like the idea you've gone with here, I've never considered any in camera thingies, it's done a really good job so you done learned me something new.

It does, I think the best music, public speaking events etc are best when there is a sense of movement, you just want to have it controlled (which you have). 10/10.

Thank you, even after all these years I'm still learning.

I've only really started messing with SOOCs, normally I am the kinda guy that will edit properly because I can (normally) be quite selective with my shooting, and if I go to that much trouble for a shot then it's worth 20mins of PP time to get it right. However, certain casual walks or lenses that work well for SOOC (I'm looking at you Lensbaby 35 Burnside with your built in vignette!) then they can be strikingly good from the get go.

Speaking of Burnside 35 and SOOCs, here's one from the same shoot as the bridge above but taken with the KP (#rebel!);

More SOOCs can be seen here (not a big album, but it's a start);

SOOC | Flickr

Ultimately I view these two ways;

1) It's cool what you can achieve if you get things right in camera at the time and really understand the built in camera options that Pentax offers. A real edit can always be improved, such as not limiting to wider aperture shots and treating the inevitable dust spots on lenses at more stopped down aperture shots.

2) It takes the fear out of shooting in Jpg only mode, if you have your camera settings under control. This is really the motivator for me, I derive the best image always when I edit in proper PP software in front of the computer. But what this little SOOC adventure has taught me is that I can navigate a lot of the fps and buffer limits imposed upon us with the Pentax brand by simply toggling out of RAW and into Jpg. If you have your Jpg settings selected wisely (and have time for some pretest shots) then I think you can exploit both sides of the coin (raw vs jpg benefits). I have found shooting with Highlight Correction On and Shadow Recovery at 2/3 (not quite max setting) gives me a lot of feedback from the rear of the LCD camera from the time of the shoot as to how I am doing for an inevitable PP perspective (regardless of shooting RAW or Jpg, because although the RAW file will differ massively the Jpg Preview shown on the rear of the camera gives me safe assurances of what is possible in clawing back (and then some) in PP.

I don't often need to shoot Jpg, but whacking the KP or K-1 into Jpg only mode solves a lot of the shortcomings, now I can record numerous 'walking down the aisle' shots without fearing the buffer so much. And of course remember that the Jpgs still have a wide scope for editing as well! (Sometimes it feels like the flow of conversation surrounding RAW vs Jpg makes it sound like Jpgs are utterly fixed! )

Ta for the feedback, I'd not given much thought to shooing jpeg with sports, yet the buffer problem was what I found to be the most annoying when shooting motorcycle racing in burst mode. I will give jpeg a go next time, thanks for details, it makes sense now that you've made me think about it.

Here's a follow on image from the last one, same lens but found a moment that just could not resist capturing.

***Since some of these were screwed up before, I don't feel too bad about re-posting, since they are really not the same image anymore... truly, to the point I redid them from scratch RAW, through the edit and crop process, so they are not only in the correct color space, but probably cropped slightly different since it's done by eye to taste.

Nice shots, I like the last one the most, something about a general 'oval' theme happening with both plant and bug

Thanks Bruce! I would have asked it to move 3 inches to the right and perch on the center of the stem, but I don't speak flutterby and I do like asymmetry once in a while.

Nice palm, reminds me of a 80's postcard from around here... before they all became tacky booty shots of "don't you wish you were here looking at these..." kinda things.
