The strutting grouse is a first rate capture.

Long ago when I was using an LX I located a drumming log within reasonable distance of a rarely used road so the car could be used as a hide. I heard and saw the bird using it when out walking without a long lens. So I returned day after day and sat in the car with my longest lens focused on the log. Do you think the bird ever returned? Not on my watch.

We've had a female coming once every several days to our feeder, which no doubt explains this guy's appearance.

Terrific captures. Snow didn't make these shots any easier. Grouse pictures are rare, nice to view something out of the ordinary. Glad you're back photographing and posting.
Thanks for sharing,

I've had my blind set up for 6 or 7 years and this guy is my first, also a lifer for me.
It's good to be posting again, thanks.

I actually prefer shooting in snow, you have to increase exposure 1/3-2/3 of a stop, but the snow acts as a reflector. There is practically no shadow on the underside of the bird, even though he's back lit. You don't get that after the snow melts.

P.S.
As an example....

If he'd been a foot backwards in the snow I'd have some detail in the shadow under his face.

During a heavy storm 3 weeks ago an old birch tree in our garden collapsed ...
here's a detail taken with the K1 and Tamron SP AF 90mm F2.8 Di Macro

... and spring is starting, finally! Even with "social distancing" I can at least go out and take a few shots in our garden
