The difference a simple accessory can make

I have not been using my K-1 II enough. I have had multiple far away destination trips where I could have used it but did not, and I can still slap myself in the face for not doing so when I look back now. The main issue has been carrying it around, of all things. I've never liked the regular strap for around the neck. It dangling in front of me just bugs me. I had a sort of decent sling camera bag but it's a pain to take the camera out and put it back in when not in use, and generally I found it too bulky when I'm exploring cities where I like to travel light.
I used a full on camera back pack for a bit but it had the same issues. I had a nice hand strap to see if just having the damn thing strapped to my hand at all times was any better... Finally found what works for me, a good high quality sling type strap (in this case the Peak Design Slide, no affiliation with them, just really happy with it).

Ever since I got the right carry method, I've been carrying around the K-1 II on a very regular basis. Last night I went into Stockholm and tried a bit of handheld low-light photography. I nearly forgot what a beast of a camera the K-1 II is...

Sometimes I read in Ansel Adams' book Examples - The Making of 40 Photographs. So I did today morning. Always inspiring. Latest talk about aspens he photographed. Pages 61 - 64.

Thought I could have a look at a tree I photographed last week. Could look nice in black & white. Ok - clearly digital work. Often experimentally. In Capture One Pro we can simulate the behaviour of filters. Many ways lead to Rome. There's the black & white tool with it's color sensitivity sliders. But I could also set saturation zero as base. Decided to use the B&W tool and also the curves tool. Using latter very strong effects are possible. After that switching to color mode often shows really weird results. But it simply works for me when going back to Black & White.

In this example I used both. I captured the scenery in very harsh light. So I had to reduce contrast and micro contrast significantly to get a not too sharp looking result with very dark or black shadows. Base Characteristics of Raw Conversion ... Curve: Auto, settings ... Exposure: 0.96 (seems I underexposed too much) Contrast: -32 (!), Clarity settings ... Method: Natural, Clarity: -57 (!), Structure: 18. High Dynamic Range (= Recovery of highlights and shadows) settings ... Highlight: -56, Shadow -17, White: 5, Black: 43. Added a bit of toning in Shadows, Midtones and Highlights. For this image I decided not to work at vignetting and didn't use local adjustments. I like it the way it is ...

And so you come back safe and sound (that's the most important thing) but also you have some great pictures and a great story to tell your kids, grandkids, anyone who will listen. I'm not sure what you can do with the pictures over the years, but be very sure that the yarn gets better and better. BTW: At one point when we were on tour in Tanzania we were joined by a group that had just completed a climb of Kilimanjaro where they had been caught by a sudden snowstorm. They were prepared (you must be), but it made for very difficult and uncomfortable hiking. They were both exhausted and animated.

I imagine after a few years the yarn will be that I walked for like a week or something, while dealing with a lot of bears trying to get us while at it

That's not a problem, I have a lot of stories ) When I was a bit younger I was kinda reckless, so most of the time when hiking I settled for impossible track times and of course ended up hiking at night all the time. Truth to be told, I was mostly worried for my teammate since it was only her 4th serious track.

And... just as I write, I signed up for climbing at night next week. Somebody asked and I couldn't say no This time it's gonna be technical climbing not hiking, but I've never done any climbing without a rope so it should be totally safe. I'm not sure I can carry the camera with me though. Maybe I will try to get it along with the DFA 50 1.4 or a small lens like the FA 43 or FA 77. One thing is for sure, never carrying the DFA 70-200 ever again My hands get pumped out too quickly. Still, I will watch "Free Solo" tonight just for the kicks I've never been a real rock climber, more like a hiker who does some climbing since I have a lot of friends that do... but every once in a while, everybody likes to imagine that they are Alex Honnold...albeit with the rope on

Anyway, here are rest of the picks. I didn't take any pictures after the sunset since I was kinda in a hurry.

You definitely brought back images worth seeing. For a while my son, not an adventurer, had a friend who was what I think is called a "free climber." He'd jump and latch unto a molding up near the ceiling with his finger tips, then work his way around the room holding on that way. I'd be hesitant to shake his hand.
