It would have been interesting to have a mode that lets us define the crop scale and saves that per lens. But I doubt we'll ever see that.

Having a new 1.2 mode at least would be super!

It is just a 24X24mm area of the senor being used. The square format soldiers insist on using a 36X36 square, which would be unsupportable with all but a select few 35mm lenses.
No this square format soldier insists on a 56X56 sensor I say while scanning some negatives to select 6 for a submission.

I often have my WGIII set to square and monochrome. One could always crop to square in Lightroom but it is always useful to see the image on the lcd or viewfinder.

I obviously know that Pentax cannot do that, even the 645 , just responding lightly to the soldier wording

Yep, not interested in that either, i83N but you go for it! 😁

As a full time IT professional, photography's strictly a hobby I do for the love of it.

I hope there could be a few more crop modes (16:9, 1.2x,...) -- and you can cycle through all of them with the new function dial on top!

https://www.pentaxforums.com/articles/cpplus-2016/2016-cp-pentax-interview.html

The Ricoh's representative says no 1:1 mode and no APS-C mode in K-1 1.00 firmware.

Why does the upper dial has CROP mode if there are no any crop modes? Nonsense?

That is not what he means.
He says there are two modes, one is "no crop", and the other one is "1.5 APS-C crop".
Unfortunately that means that the 1:1 square crop is removed.

Now is the time for mass spamming of Pentax asking for SR in video and 1:1 crop.

Anyway - it's nonsense to make CROP MODE on the dial if there are only TWO mode - FF and APS-C.

Still useful though, super quick access to change the setting without diving in to menus.
However, information in the viewfinder is pretty limited so maybe you can't use the wheel for some settings as you will not se what you are changing in the viewfinder.

Duh, you can set the mode switch (or whatever it is called) to crop and then toggle between full frame and APS-C (1.5x) crop mode with the spinner. As pointed out above that's faster than stepping through the menus and you can crop anyways until Sunday in PP. And who knows, 1:1 may be added back in a future firmware update - unlikely though if there are not indicators on the LCD.

So deleting the 1:1 mode was a last minute decision. You want them to delay production further to modify the camera to remove the crop selection on the dial?

As I understand there is more quick access to choose FF or APS-C mode thru programming buttons...Need to wait manual

Yes, it does seem a waste of the command wheel if there are only two options.

Plus as the the selector dial is recessed from the camera back, it is not well located ergonomically for one handed operation. You can't easily rotate the selector knob around with your thumb alone, nor index finger, whilst holding the camera up to your eye. You need to move your whole hand up on top of the camera to rotate the selector knob.

With some FF cameras (eg Nikon), you can assign a button on the body. Press the Fn button to choose image area mode, rotate rear command dial to choose the ratio (FX/DX/etc).

Pentax should let users choose one of the Fx1/Fx2 buttons to switch crop modes, and allow other little-used buttons (eg AE-L) to be re-assigned too. (From what I can tell so far, the K-1 has no buttons that let you select crop-mode).

IMHO, for the K-1, Pentax should let every button on the camera (and grip) be re-assigned to almost every camera function. Would greatly expand the control flexibility of the camera, and work well with the expanded U1-U5 saved user modes.
