Yes, it does seem a waste of the command wheel if there are only two options.

Plus as the the selector dial is recessed from the camera back, it is not well located ergonomically for one handed operation. You can't easily rotate the selector knob around with your thumb alone, nor index finger, whilst holding the camera up to your eye. You need to move your whole hand up on top of the camera to rotate the selector knob.

With some FF cameras (eg Nikon), you can assign a button on the body. Press the Fn button to choose image area mode, rotate rear command dial to choose the ratio (FX/DX/etc).

Pentax should let users choose one of the Fx1/Fx2 buttons to switch crop modes, and allow other little-used buttons (eg AE-L) to be re-assigned too. (From what I can tell so far, the K-1 has no buttons that let you select crop-mode).

IMHO, for the K-1, Pentax should let every button on the camera (and grip) be re-assigned to almost every camera function. Would greatly expand the control flexibility of the camera, and work well with the expanded U1-U5 saved user modes.

I would think you would be able to assign one of the fx buttons

1:1 makes sense -- many of their DA lenses suddenly become "full frame, cropped to square". This is smart. Something the D810 doesn't have. I look forward to be able to use the DA* 60-250mm in 24Mp square format. As such it represents a great option for us: 24Mp square (K-1) vs. 24Mp 2:3 format (K-3). Yet another reason to have a two-body system.

YMMV

It doesn't seem so.

In the set of K-1 spec sheet images circulated earlier, you can only assign Fx1/Fx2 to:

- One Push File format;
- Outdoor View Setting;
- Flash Mode;
- Pixel Shift Resolution;
- Shake Reduction;
- Horizon Correction;
- Electronic Level.

Anyway - it's nonsense to make CROP MODE on the dial if there are only TWO mode - FF and APS-C.
Not really. I can see myself switching on the fly between these modes to get quicker fps.

I saw video about upper dial - and as for me, the necessity is unobvious

No touch-screen - there is decision when you use LCD in any position, but why didn't they make touch-screen instead of two big dials?

Because when you have your eye up to the viewfinder and your nose pressed against the LCD screen fiddling around with a visually cued context based touchscreen is the last thing you want to think about.

I don’t know, but I envision the usage to be more as I can set a few more parameters while holding the camera waist high without using the back LCD at all. But that depends on how much info the small top display can show.

We can all crop 1.5x APS-C in post, as well. Sometimes the time saving of doing it in camera is nice.

You know there are scripts in almost all image processing software now. To make crop script is less than a minute, so when import images they crop automatically.

Yes, I do. Not sure what that has to do with the availability of different aspect ratios in camera, though. Unless you're advocating that all crop modes be removed...

I just think that crop mode is more for viewfinder indication and raw+/jpg shooters.

So according to the video from CP+ just posted on the news page there are three selections using the smart function crop setting - full frame, APS-C, and auto (depends on lens mounted).

Go to about 1 min 30 seconds in first video
Pentax K-1 Hands-On Demo Videos - CP+ 2016 | PentaxForums.com

We don't know the context of the photo showing the 4:3 outline. Perhaps @JPT or someone else can translate the captions to English.

Not if it's added later through firmware. It would be pretty hard to add "Crop" to the dial through, wouldn't it?
