Kenspo! crop 1:1 question.

A question to Kenspo (or anyone else who have a K-1 available)

As I understand it you now have a preproduction K-1 at your disposal.
Could you please try the crop mode 1:1 and tell us what the result is?

What is the size of the resulting picture in pixels? And what, if anything, is displayed in the viewfinder (any guide lines) ?

Also what firmware version is your camera?

Thanks.

Great question. I'd love to know this too.

Thanks

Some of these questions have already been answered in Ricoh marketing materials. Crop mode gives a 15mp image. The viewfinder shows a border around the crop area, while also showing the remainder of the full frame which is good for following a moving subject.

On the main PF page there is an article on the new camera. It contains a video that shows the viewfinder overlays, Info, and what it looks like with various DA lenses.

Here, scroll down, there is an image of the viewfinder and just beneath it is the video (viewfinder and crop modes can be seen around 2:10):

Pentax did it right, it will be good for sports photographers using APSC for high FPS, as you can still see the surrounding area, so you know when subject is about to enter into frame.

Considering the short end of the sensor is 4912 pixels, a full 1:1 crop would leave you a 24.1 megapixel image area (4912x4912).

@ both DeadJohn and Na Horuk,

Yes, I have seen that and that is the normal APS-C crop mode. It seems to work as expected.

But in one of the videos where they show the different crop modes available in the settings menu, one can see that there is another mode called "1:1". I guess that means a crop mode with a square format. But that is just a guess, hence the question to Kenspo.

Edit:
@skierd. That is what I think/hope to. It should work with most APS-C lenses as well (probably).

Oh, I understood that differenty. I thought 1:1 means regular "uncropped", whole crop would be the APSC (1.5x factor crop relative to the 35mm 1:1). Didn't give it much though, you might be right. I wouldn't expect a non-mirrorless camera to have a square crop mode, though.

What Gimbal is talking about is the 1:1-crop, not the APS-C crop. I am also curious. I have drawn a little and this is my guess...

Wow if 1:1 crop is in, I'll have a really hard time not to buy that beast...

I wonder which of the DA lenses that will not cover full frame would cover the square. I might check the DA 15 on the film camera however my darkroom is temporarily down for renovations.

All DA-lenses should cover this 1:1 crop since the image circle is as big as the FF sensor is high.

I wonder if matrix metering takes into account the crop area? You would think so.

Draw a circle around the crop rectangle and you can clip the red square.

Right, so there might still be dark corners for some extremely tight aps-c lenses. But I guess most will work ok.

I wonder if there's an LCD overlay for square crops? This K-1 keeps getting better!
