math is my friend - some times

I was just going over the lenses I have in hand, to see what a digital 36×24 camera would need from me to be of any service. It's been quite a while since film passed through my ME or Ricoh bodies so the K-1 prompted me to look things over. Strictly a mental experiment, just for fun - of course. Hmmm..
  • 36×24 "FF" primes = 28M/2.8, 50A/1.7, 135M/3.5, 300/5.6, 400mm/6.3
  • 36×24 "FF" zooms = 15-17mm/4.5 fisheye*, Vivitar 35-105/3.2-4, JCP 80-200/3.5, Sigma 100-300/4.5-6.7
  • 24×18 APS zooms = DA10-17 fisheye, DA18-55WR, HD55-300WR plus all the above

So for K-50: 10-300mm or 15-450mme. Plus my trusty and ancient 400mm Hanimar for 600mme.
And for K-1: 15-400mm in fully compatible lenses, including the Hanimar.

* Pentax K-1 samples show the 10-17FE working to their satisfaction above 15mm, that was most kind of them!

I'm not saying these are ideal lenses for the best of sensors, just that I have essentially equal FL coverage with no further expense. And of course the K-1 is free to use the DA zooms any old time. I really wasn't expecting this result as I was in no way planning to acquire a K-1 any time soon.

If only the math that uses my existing bank balances could be so friendly!

I like the 'no further expense' rationale. Would love to see my spouse's reaction. No K-1 plans for me either.

I already did a similar mental experiment a year ago when Pentax announced FF development, and I found out that I will keep some of the good APS-C lenses and sell others. Its the wide angles I will keep. I decided that I I would try to keep the total weight down by avoiding to buy heavy lenses. So good bye to the plans for a long telezoom (I'll rather crop from a lightweight 100-300mm or even go for a 500mm f/8 mirror lens). But the middle ground will be covered by an old AF Tamron 28-200 for allround and a few good primes like the XS 40mm f/2,8, DA 50/1,8, Tamron 90/2,8 macro and an old MF Chinon 135mm f/2,8. So the only FF lens I probably will buy are the mirror lens. This will keep my backpack rather light and still extremely versatile.
